    Maintenance: Coolant Change

    Question: Do you guys recommend besides changing the water pump and serpentine belt is to change also the idle pulley, tensioner, and fan clutch? I don't want to pay out of the butt, but I sure do believe in change it before it's too late.

    The serp belt and the idler pulley would be pretty cheap to do...I think that's about as far as I would go

    Though wouldn't you agree that the water pump will fail eventually at 100K?

    Water pumps lasting beyond 200K miles is not uncommon nowadays. Occasionally inspect the water pump bearing for looseness and pink coolant residue around the weep hole on the
    casting. When that time comes, it's time to replace.

    back to bone stock.
    i changed the belt and pulley..

    the pump going bad is an easy spot..and they dont fail catastrophically.

    hey, what about the tranny fluid flush/change?

    If the vehicle warms up in a timely fashion and doesn't overheat, leave it alone. At 100K miles
    all you really need to do is replace the coolant as scheduled and inspect all the other
    components. If the belt doesn't have cracks, deeply worn grooves; idler pulleys spin freely with
    no bearing noise; and the fan clutch has no silicone fluid leakage and properly cools the engine;
    none of it needs to be replaced.

    Last questions I have to commute 4,000 miles from California to Maryland for the military any advice for preventive measures so I wont break down or I am on track and should be good.

    Agreed. Aside from coolant, all I have replaced is the belt. I'm at 166K. None of that stuff fails over night. If you regularly look at your engine, you will catch it plenty soon enough.

    Change your belt,coolant,keep the old belt in your truck ,and you never have too be worried about being stranded if you lose a belt.

    I see no reason to change out the water pump at 100k when there is nothing wrong with it. A lot of labor for no reason.

    I don’t change belts till they look like they need to be changed.

    my 4 cylinder is at 199,000.changed the coolant, plugs,and trans and rearend lubes at 100,000.the belt twice.water pumps go forever.idlers when they squeak.just my .02.

    I drained my coolant today, started with the passanger side, and then front radiator. The driver side didnt drain any coolant when i open the valve just a splash. Is this normal? Also, it was less than 2 gallons when refilled
