Discount tire lug nut issue

My truck: 2014 Tacoma V6 Prerunner Double cab.

This is new. Went to Discount tire to see about getting a tire patched up. During the removal of the tire the technician was concerned about my wheel lug nuts. Saying they didn’t belong with the wheels I had on my truck. Starting talking about being a safety concern etc. Funny thing is i’ve been to this location and other Discount Tire locations without ever hearing this.

I purchased my Tacoma new off the showroom floor, never made any wheel modifications since i’ve had my truck. These are TRD rims and from everything i’ve read only sold in the Gulf area.

They refused to put the lug nuts back on when they installed the spare and were going to charge me $3 bucks per lug nut, until I “put on a show”. So, they comprimised and just gave me the 6 for that one wheel and handed back the original 6.

Anyone else have issues with this?

I've not seen those wheels in person, but there sounds like some fuggery going on.

The lug nuts you posted are ET cone base nuts, typical for aftermarket wheels, and those wheels probably qualify, the nuts that usually come on Toyota trucks are the kind with the shoulder and captive washer on them.

Irregardless, if the dealer installed those wheels or if you have a Texas Edition Tacoma that came with those wheels factory I can't imagine the lug nuts are wrong.

I'm guessing the tech was trying to upsell you, figured you had a nice truck with aftermarket wheels and assumed you were made of money and it would be an easy sale.

If your wheels haven't fallen off yet and the ride is smooth then keep running what Toyota put on your truck, don't go back to that particular shop, and perhaps file a complaint with corporate Discount Tires office.

Yep. That’s pretty much what I was told. That my lug nuts were probably after market and not mean’t for the rim i mentioned. Even showed me the lug nuts you posted as the typical stock ones.

I have had no issues since owning the truck. I do have the TSS edition truck. They came with the wheels.

I’m confused also.

 

If you can show an up close picture of one of the seats where the lug nuts go on the Texas wheels I can tell you definitively.

 

The factory or dealer can screw up, so I'd never say never. Unlikely, yes. Impossible, no.

What is more likely is DT trying to make a little extra coin.

 

Scratch marks are from them trying to see if there was metal debris to prove there point. They were unable to.

 

Also a definite possible. Since the 00012-A1254-01 wheels are offered by Toyota but apparently don't take the standard Toyota lug nut I still can see someone making a mistake or getting confused.

 

I recently had an alignment done at a similar place (box store, not Discount Tire however), and it pulled so bad to the left I couldn't drive it. That was after 3 attempts and having the truck all day. Since it was the lifetime alignment, I took it somewhere else the following morning and had it redone, and almost every number was in the red. Before the first alignment, it wasn't even bad, I was just doing it because I got new tires and wanted to make sure it was good.

Moral of the story: some of those places suck, and the people that work there don't know shit, so just don't go back.

Actually because those holes have a wide flat bottom and not a tapered seat I belive they should have the washer style nuts in them.

That still doesn't explain why discount tire wouldn't allow you to have your truck back without you buying new nuts. That's ridiculous.

It should be policy for them to have removed one gone, nope this is wrong informed the customer they were uncomfortable doing the work and put the nut back on and let you go. That covers them and you.

That said I think if you've been running them this long, and the fact that they have the extended threads, and also since Toyota wheels are hub centric you'll be fine. If anything take it back by the dealer and say hey I just discovered this was messed up from factory, it's a saftey concern please fix your fault pro-bono, possibly even start a claim with Toyota corporate if you really want to get into it. You could even argue the wheels have been damaged as a result of them installing thw wrong lugs and request a new set of wheels if you're feeling extra angsty about it.

Otherwise simply note the information and get on with life.

 

Correct. They even had a stock lug nut handy and demostrated it did fit.

 

It's hard to tell in the photos, but if there's a flat and you can use shank style lug nuts that would seem better. At least you'll be more likely to have the wheel center on the hub like it's supposed to and not try to center on the lugs.

 

I agree. If a shank style nut works, I would use it. But only if the wheel is hub centric. If it's lug centric....I'd stick with the acorns

 

Those ETs are the correct lug nuts.. Those wheels all come with those lugs from the dealer. I’ve seen them many times.

 

Just adds to the confusion, though. If they are OEM Toyota I'd assume they were hub centric but then wouldn't use ET lug nuts. So the acorns the OP linked are right.

 

No way an acorn would fit in there. The shape of the wheeel needs that ET shank and the cone lookin part to assist in securing the wheel. You good OP, carry on.

 

They could be both. Most OEM Toyota alloy rims are hud centric. OEM steelies are both hub centric and lug centric.

However, I've noticed over the years that many post factory option "Toyota" rims tend to be both hub and lug centric and use acorn nuts. I bet his wheels are the same
