If you have youngins hunting on their own, show them some pictures of other animals with antlers/horns. I certainly knew the difference at that age, but I suppose there are plenty of kids who only know deer.

Only a few miles from where I hunt. Same county. I don’t know what I’d do if I saw an elk. Probably sit there slack-jawed thinking no one would ever believe me.

I'm having an ongoing argument with my wife on what age is appropriate for a child to come out hunting. My son is 5 1/2 and I'm looking to bring him out for his first hunt this year. She's concerned for his safety etc, I'm concerned on whether he can keep quiet for longer than 30 seconds...

Took this buck from SC public lands - Sumter National during bow hunt season this year. Once my kid saw the euro and had some venison he's been obsessed with getting out into the woods :yay:

What's an appropriate age to start hunting at....thoughts?20171029_111023_resized.jpg

I started hunting doves and squirrels when I was 6 and was toting a rifle when I was 9. my daughter will be 4 1/2 next year and I'm thinkin hard about taking her on the youth day.

I don't feel there is a magic age, more a level of understanding of what it is they are doing. My kids started shooting and going hunting with me around 4 or 5. They did not actually hunt until around 9 or 10. Some states set a minimum age and others don't. Tough call really as to when they are mature enough to pull the trigger themselves. My daughter is 21 and she still doesn't want to hunt on her own. I think mostly she wants me there to do the gutting.

As far as safety, we have an acquaintance whose young son was killed mistaken for a coyote. A bad deal all around and plenty of blame to be shared by the parent and the shooter, who was a friend of the family hunting with them at the time. Dress them in plenty of orange, head lamp on them if walking in the dark, etc. If your 5yr old is with you, getting the big one is not the main priority.

Going to be going after this buck this weekend. Have him at the same feeder at first light ( camera is off by 3 hours) consistently. Rut is just starting to kick in too. Fingers crossed.

As long as they can keep quiet and still then they are old enough. I’ve been dragging my kids around the hill since they were about 5 years old and out here on the west coast it’s mainly spot and stock no tree stands.
