Alright fellas... home made exterior frame plates. Cut circles in them or no? Is it really necessary?

I found out holes and stitching the welds is a terrible idea... allows moisture and water to get past the stitches. Really should be welded 360 degrees around.... why do the companies that make these plates advertise them being stitch welded aver 2 or 3 inches???

    I do.
You can weld inside the circles to attach the plates to existing frame in many more locations.

OK guys for example... frame plates on the exterior of the frame. When u sandwich the plate to the frame, is the general consensus to use a weldable primer? How do you properky seal the plate and frame surface so once it is welded they won't rust?

You really can't stop the rust, only slow it down.

Once done welding, coat the living he'll out of every part of the frame with your choice of undercoating.

I have found that there really isn't one type better than another as long as you do it every year.

Used motor oil seems to have almost the same preventative characteristics as any of the other common types of undercoating. Use what you like.

I've never bothered with weld thru primer. I can't say it helps or hurts.

Kind of funny but ever noticed the old beater cars...the one spot that never has rust is where the rear main seal has been leaking for years and spewing oil on the undercarriage :)

No clue if weld thru primer works or helps or whatever but I do use it on some stuff. Definitely get the can and not the spray cans of it though.

But really just use a good primer before you top coat it and itll last quite awhile. Especially if you do preventive care every year to it.

I can`t recall ever using weld through primer .

That sort of came from those Huge Structural jobs where every thing would rust if some coating was not applied

Then most paint burns off when your welding what I hate is that seam sealer

I get what your saying but I think I was on top of my upkeep... I think water/dirt being able to get in there was the problem from the get go. Not welding all the way around the plate was the mistake. Won't happen again

If you fill the tank with water there should be no concern, right?

If a person needs to ask will this welder work Things are not going to go well!!!!

There are ways to do this type of tank not something I would post on the internet .

So many factors enter into this it is down right spooky

I could see why Koditten got rattled

We’re going to do a water heater tank smoker soon. That should be okay right?

propane is denser than ambient air, and will sit in and invisible pool of itself until disturb by an outside force, so the "vapors" wont leave a tank by their self
