    Update 2:
So after the dealer had my truck 2 weeks waiting on a gasket, I emailed Jim Lentz. Basically said I was really unhappy with the situation, described what was going on. Next morning the dealer called me and said the part had shipped, and would be there in 1-2 days, and if I wanted I could come get my truck until they had the part. I picked it up that Monday afternoon, made an appointment to drop it back off yesterday and everything went smooth.

Email Jim Lentz. They shipped the part quick to my dealer after I did. Describe your situation and why it makes you unhappy/angry, be concise and polite.

Yeah part of it is my fault, the service GM hasn't called me and I haven't called him. Emailing corporate is my back up plan though.

Part of what I was unhappy with was I kept having to call the dealer, I said in my email that the poor communication was unacceptable. They definitely talked to the dealer because after that they did a much better job of keeping me in the loop.

I would make emailing corporate your primary plan, I sent the email last Sunday while I was watching the Bills game and literally Monday morning at 9:15 they called me saying the part had shipped. I waited too because you shouldn’t have to email corporate to get a damn gasket, but it really lit a fire under their asses.

Overall I’m happy and I’ve got my truck back, two weeks and I was climbing the walls angry I don’t know how some people went MONTHS sans truck...

The dealer did fill my gas tank that was nearly empty, even though I can’t blame them for the underlying part logistics issue. If they send me a survey I’ll give them the thumbs up.

I'm giving the gm one chance to fix this. I posted pics of my diff and a pic of the service report. I don't think I'm wrong on my diagnosis, but to be told what I was is unforgivable Imo. I have already been threatened with a carolla loaner. I got more bad news for him if he thinks that's going to happen. I use my truck for work, if a carolla could do what I needed, I would have bought a carolla.
This whole deal is pretty stupid really. After the trouble my fj was, I guess Toyota reliability means something different to me than to most. I do love this truck though.

My parts finally arrived and I have an appointment for this weekend. Was anyone's rear diff problem WORSE after it was supposedly fixed?

Finally took my truck in a few days ago for the differential recall. I checked mine after I heard about it on this forum. Mine had shown signs of seepage but no leak. Initially the dealers were holding the trucks even though they were not leaking. I did not take my truck in but kept in contact with my service advisor. It starting leaking a couple of weeks ago so my service advisor got me in right away (I took someone's place in line due to no call back). Fluid was not low so they just replaced gasket and bolts and finally got my truck serviced.
Can't say enough good things about Livermore Toyota, customer service is top notch (even for this very picky customer) and they take good care of my truck.

Finally got the free extended warranty plan that Toyota promised me last month. It says it is the Platinum plan good until 2024, hopefully I won't need it! Looks like Toyota is finally getting their act together.

Had my diff replaced under warranty, does anyone know what the colored dots mean on the differentials? So far so good the howling is gone, hope it lasts.

I believe those to be pen markings, when they assemble for QC

My truck is not on the actual recall list. I checked the torque on the nuts... it was fine. I do see seepage though....no visible oil. I have 15,500 miles on my 2017....bought it in September of 2016...which falls in the production range for the recall. I guess I'm gonna take it in....how I absolutely hate my local dealer. I don't have any howling noise. What do y'all think?

Take it in and get it documented. Try another dealer if you can.

The 2.5 month wait pissed me off enough that I sold the truck. I'll probably regret selling it one day, but the situation made me not want to get a Toyota again. This was my 4th Tacoma.

    Well...
Now that things appear to have finally settled down some, I took my TRD/OR in for scheduled maintenance today, and also got my weeping pumpkin looked at. It was a most agreeable experience.

I brought the weeping issue to my Service Associate's attention when I dropped off, and he said he would have one of the Lead Techs look at it. The Tech verified the weeping, checked my fluid level in the pumpkin (it was all good there) and they advised me that they were going to perform the gasket/nut replacement procedure under warranty. They had all the parts on hand, except the gasket, so that was ordered.

I left the dealership in my own truck, and now just have to wait for a call when the gasket comes in, so I can drop it off again to have the whole thing wrapped up. The folks at Livermore Toyota have never failed to deliver awesome service!

I took my 17’ sr5 in about 6 months ago. They torqued down the nuts and sent me on my way. 3 weeks ago I took it back because it had wet spots all around the edges. They replaced the whole diff and off I went... again. I took it back today because it was now leaking worse than it was before. Again, they replaced the diff and off I went. I’m going to be pissed if I have to go back there a 4th time and have another diff put in... again.

Food for thought. When I heard to torque the nuts to 18 ft lbs., I thought that was very low especially since we aren't talking about a cover like most trucks. Here we are talking about the front housing for the differential. Just a regular cover on an F150 is about 35 ft lbs....and that's not a housing - just a cover.

Is Toyota using a different gasket material?

The whole differential? Or just the gasket?

Seems crazy they’re swapping diffs for a leak. Mine howls like crazy and they won’t touch it.
