    Worst-Made Cars on the Road
    by Hannah Elliott

If you want to drive something dependable and long-lasting, steer clear of these vehicles.

With a 22% improvement in sales last month, and despite the six-month, $4.3 billion loss it announced Wednesday, General Motors is likely to have its strongest spring and summer in years. Plus, the automaker had critically acclaimed new products at the recent New York Auto Show and the much-anticipated Chevrolet Volt is due out this fall.

Unfortunately just because GM's cars are selling well now doesn't mean they're the best bet for durability or value -- yet. It'll take awhile before GM's new direction shows up in tangible new products at the dealership.

Four of the seven vehicles on our list of the worst-made cars on the road come from GM brands. And all of the cars on the list -- including Chrysler's Dodge Nitro and Jeep Wrangler -- are made by Detroit's Big Three. Only one car on the list is made by Ford Motor (NYSE: F).

They might as well go ahead and changed their name:

    Wikipedia:

"On June 1, 2009 General Motors filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings from which it emerged on July 10, 2009 in a reorganization in which a new entity acquired the most valuable assets. GM is temporarily majority owned by the United States Treasury and to a smaller extent the Canadian Crown, with the US government investing a total of US$57.6 billion under the Troubled Asset Relief Program."

Seriously, who lookes to Forbes as any source of automobile quality information? I owned an Aveo. I never had a lick of trouble with that car. An Escallade is little more than a fancy Tahoe, and CR likes the Tahoe. The Colorado, I'll give 'em that. I had the Isuzu badged version, and had plenty of irritating little issues with it.

I love that the Colorado and the Canyon are both on the list.

This is no surprise...anyone that can read has known "imports" (they're made here now, folks) have superior reliability.

My 03 Tacoma has a Front Differential bearing issue that is afflicting many owners.. mostly 2nd Gens... It's a common problem with these trucks and Toyota have been replacing the front diff under warranty.

Other than the rust frame issue (which is now coated with a layer of tar by the dealer), I'd say the truck should be solid.

No worse than many other GM vehicles.

This Tacoma certainly lags in durability compared to my Honda Element, by a big margin.

Forbes just wrote the article. The research came from Consumer Reports and J.D. Power and Associates.

    Quote from the article:

"Those studies are all from Consumer Reports: The Most Reliable Cars Report; Best and Worst Values Report; Best and Worst Safety Performance Survey; and the CR overall scores for 2010 vehicles.

We then added to the list any vehicles that received fewer than three out of five power circles in this year's Vehicle Dependability Study from J.D. Power and Associates. Any car, truck or SUV named among the worst in at least three of those five total studies made the final cut to be on the "Worst-Made" list."

I don't think CR is worth the paper it's written on. I've seen them shred a domestic nameplate over some minor ergonomic issue, and then wax eloquently over an even worse layout or totally ignore major faults on an import vehicle. J.D. Power frequently disagrees with CR on many of their reliability rankings. As I said, I'll give them the Colorado/Canyon twins. They are pretty much universally bitched about across the board.
