You save tax by trading vs selling on your own. You have to do the math on each situation to figure out what really is best. I'd have gotten around the same thing on a private sale as a trade and would have missed out on a couple of thousand in tax savings. In TN you only pay tax on the difference between trade value and the new purchase. So if you get $30k ok your trade and buy a $35k vehicle, you only pay tax on $5k.

Definitely yes - at least for me. Get a number of Costco price quotes at different dealers, then make those guys compete it out from there. It worked really well for me. Without Costco pricing, almost nobody wanted to budge from MSRP for such a new vehicle.

The real win is taking their trade number as well as a car and trade number with you to the dealer. When they low-ball on trade, tell them what you can get at carmax. They'll usually match it so you get a better trade value plus tax savings.

I see...in SC there's a flat tax of $300 on new car sales.

True...I def plan to do that first...although the strategy didn't work out for my dad...they were way off Carmax offer and wouldnt budge...still I'll try though.

My response would be, and every dealers response should be, “great, exactly how many 2018 Tacoma’s are on Carmax’s lot?”

So It's not the same Costco price for all participating dealers? Glad I may still be able to play a few of them against each other for a slightly better deal

Carmax is a low baller in my area. I shopped my truck around to a few Toyota dealers and they all offered a respectable trade-in value on my 2013 Tacoma. I ended up working with one dealer so I could get the tax benefits of a the trade-in value off of the price of my new truck. Good luck!

Yep, any participating dealer negotiates their own prices with Costco. Each dealer is different. Get the price from each dealer for the exact truck and specs you want then play them off each other. Make them battle it out. :duel:

A back step for when I get older, Carhartt seatcovers, 4Runner wheels, Topper, and "tats all folks"! --for now!!
These tax laws vary wildly from state to state. Mo sounds very close to what your laws are -- the big difference from private to trade in being that the trade in and new purchase prices are up front. you know exactly what you are getting for your old car --and what you are paying for your new car -with no dealer trickery involved

Anyone know if they've added an "Oh Sh*t!!" grab bar on drivers side?

    yep.. definitely worth researching..

and MO tax laws are weird anyway. my wife's family is from there. her grandma has a side-by-side mule....................and has to have a license plate on it to drive it around their property.

I drove a 2018 yesterday! Was in getting a part for my 2nd gen and there it was. They said it came in that morning (offroad) No leather, they said that was in another package, MSRP was 39k in CA. I can confirm the TSS can manually turned off. There is a button for the TSS right by the HVAC just like the 2nd gens have those blank switches. It also has park assist. The button is right by it, but I guess it beeps when in tight parking situations( I didnt use that). The interior was Sexy AF!! really had to bite my tongue because I love my 2015 too much Hope this helps guys

What made it SAF? There aren't really any changes from the 2017 model.
