Leaving Saturday for Sonora, TX for my daughter's annual deer hunt. She doesn't get much time off from school, but we make the best of it. Here's a few pics from the ranch: Pics from this week regardless of camera setting.

They do have a lot of nice deer, but body wise they are the smallest deer I've ever seen. This is her deer from last year. About the size of does I've shot other places.

I have no idea about the feeders. It's on a small ranch in TX we hunt every year.

The size of a dog is about right. One year I really messed up and had her shoot a 10pt that looked really good in relation to the deer. When we walked up on it I realized the deer was about 2ft tall and had the narrowest head and ears I'd ever seen. About the size of a yearling nubbin.

Here is an older buck she shot several years ago. A good mature buck, but not much of a body at all:

still a good trophy albeit a small bodied animal ;) Part of the issue with small bodied animals is overpopulation. IMO. There are some nice big bodied bucks Ive seen on TV shows. So they do exist.

I think it's the South TX deer that are big bodied. I think the deer in this area of TX were imported from the East coast in the 40s or 50s because the native deer were all shot out. That's what the ranch owner says anyway. Sounds plausible. Might just be an excuse for having midget deer.

I’m buying another :fingerscrossed: when it gets colder and the rattle snakes are dormant  . I can’t go scout while they’re crawling, the closest hospital to this land is 1 hour away :ohsnap: , we killed one w/ 20+ rattles last year- it was hard(heavy) to hold in the air with a shovel:eek:

I don’t think it’s an arbitrary number. Some kids are more immature than others and can’t handle it.

    I started at 6. With a .22 rabit hunting.

Gun safety is something that needs to be instilled. I probably wouldn’t let a little kid loose with their own gun. I’d carry it for them until it was time to use it. So that safety to me isnt an issue.

My concern is more getting out there and sit in a stand for 20 minutes and we have to go back because someone is “cold” LOL.

My husband has already expressed concerns with that. He’s worried our future kids will get frostbit because I won’t go in LOL

I would want to expose my kids to the killing/butchering part early on. My biggest fear is having a kid that would freak out and not be able to handle it.
