Gaia GPS is the way to go look it up and give it a try. Way points, tracking, guidance, route planning , ground speed altitude it has it all. There are also satellite and topographic map layers in the application so no need to have a separate for each. There is also a good deal of routes in the data base that you can download and use. I’ve had it for several years and it is super functional and easy to use. No connection needed for it to work as long as you download and save the maps ahead of time.

+1 for Gaia, it was invaluable for solo exploring on trails. I want to get a cheap tablet to install on my dash for a bigger screen for Gaia.

I got a used 2nd gen Nexus 7 for cheap, it turned out to be a 4g one, but even the WiFi only ones have a real GPS chip, which you will definitely want. Most WiFi only tablets don't have a GPS chip.

I also don't even need to get a SIM card for mine if I want to use network data on the road, since I can just make a WiFi hotspot with my phone.

Agree totally with these guys on the tablet with cellular coverage. However I still take the time to save maps before trips for the areas with no coverage. Sucks to get to a fork in the road in unfamiliar territory and your map won’t load.

I also dig up cellular coverage maps and overlay them so I can figure the areas to save.

Can any of you guys recommend a 12v water pump? 3-5gpm?

Thinking of using my transmission cooler part of the radiator to recirc water for my solar shower in the winter and curious about a pump that'd accomplish that.

    I use these...

Not sure how well they would handle that kind of heat...?

This pump is actually designed for 100*c temps and the purpose you are looking for.

Awesome. I knew you guys would come through. I'll look into the three. Water only needs to get to 110-120.

I had three apps to choose from during my last trip. Maps.me, Gaia, and the Garmin Earthmate that I had paired to my Garmin inReach. I kept gravitating towards the Gaia for the routes and maps. It was super easy to use and to help make routes on the fly.

Not sure what "that" is, but I've really enjoyed BackCountry Navigator on Android. Works great on the tablet, and does a lot of good import/export to Google Earth for computer editing. Note that the creator has recently started work on BackCountry Navigator XE, which is going to bring support to iOS, but will be subscription based.

I love how easy Google earth is to use on my desktop. That may push me to try the backcountry app.

Gaia is my favorite, by far. The snap-to-trail function is awesome for trip planning

Yup! Worked out great when I was already in Moab and needed to plan some trails on the fly.

I used Gaia, Viewranger, and Garmin Inreach/Earthmate for my last trip.

I personally liked Gaia for route planning and view ranger for executing the routes.
