I'd consider myself a master manual driver, have over 300k miles on manual cars and probably 200+ hours of track time (two supras, 3 BMWs, Matrix, WRX, Legacy GT, 2nd gen 4runner, and Lexus IS250... all manuals) and another 150k miles on motorcycles (Ducatis and BMWs). I STILL struggle to understand why you'd want a TRD Offroad in manual, you lose capability and the ONLY positive is a subjective "driving experience", but even then the 6spd in the tacomas isn't impressive and its not a sports car its a truck, so I just don't get it :notsure:

Yeah it'd be more fun while prerunning in 2wd through the desert to row my own gears but that's really the only situation I can think of where it would be more desirable on an offroad tacoma. Technical trails, rock crawling, towing all of those benefit greatly from having a torque converter, plus MTS/Crawl control and a hydraulic brake booster on the automatic Offroads.

I would never fault anyone for getting a 6spd Tacoma I think they're still pretty cool, but I still don't get it :anonymous:

So many things I could say... but that would probably get me in trouble. So I will simply say this:

I have over a million miles logged to manual vehicles and over 500k to automatics. I have never once been driving a manual and thought to myself "wow, I wish this was an automatic". I have often been in an automatic wishing I was in one of the manuals. (and for the record, this includes technical trails, rock crawling and towing).

I understand you don't get why someone would want a manual OR, but that doesn't make it the case for everyone. I prefer to actually be the driver instead of having crawl control do the driving for me (yes, I have used it, and never have thought about using it again). IMO it is more fun in a manual in every case, which is why I am glad Toyota still makes a manual in upper trims.

I agree with you. My last truck was 6MT but the newest is an auto. I did that for my wife as her back stops her from lifting both feet at the same time. We went down to one vehicle. She gave up her Rav4 and I gave up the MT. She asked the other day if I was liking the Auto. I responded that is was an auto and left it at that. She understood.

My sentiments exactly. While I thought it might be nice to have a manual again, I didn't want to think about messing with the clutch while crawling or going through technical trails. It's a slow truck with not the best 6speed either (this isnt an s2k).

Actually I grew up in the Bay Area and traveled to LA often. Brother lives up north in Seattle and I go there often too. I think that is nearly half the cities mentioned :D. Drove in NY in an automatic (rented cause we flew) and hated every minute of driving the automatic while I was there. Kept wishing for the manual.

Again, I am all for people wanting automatics, it just isn't for everyone. I mainly don't like the looming death of the manuals that I see coming...

    +1

    Totally agree!

On top of that, there is no proof of a trail that an automatic trans and Crawl Control can get through that a skilled guy in a manual can't do.
If so, lets see it in a direct comparison.

Don't get me wrong, Crawl Control is amazing technology, and is what will keep some of our Millennials capable of going off road with their fathers.

One more thing, plan ahead if traffic is too difficult for anyone to accomplish in a manual. Either wait till traffic dies down, or move so you don't have to deal with traffic, or buy an automatic.

If your wife can't drive a manual, teach her. If she can't learn, replace her, or just go buy an automatic.

I have high hopes for my kiddo. He learned to drive in my daughters automatic car, and my F350 PSD CC 4x4. Once I felt comfortable that he understood how important it is to pay attention to his surroundings during driving, I started teaching him the 5spd manual in my Gen 1. He picked up on the manual with ease, and to me he pays even more attention to the road and his surroundings than he did in either of the autos. He has no problem in Portland's stupid stop and go traffic, going up or down hills as I make him drive my butt around as often as I can to give him the mileage under his belt. Now, he is only 16 years old and even he said once he learned the manual, he actually started to like driving more. He feels the connection with the vehicle like the many of us out there that say the same thing.

Like @csmacomber said above, I have never once been driving a manual and thought to myself "wow, I wish this was an automatic". So true!

    a.) you can't drive a manual

    and/or

b.) you regret not getting one.

...either way you're bitter about it, why else make that comment in a thread where the OP was clearly only asking about a manual?

I do admit there is one situation where I wish I had an automatic - heavy freeway traffic in Southern California. I'll deal with it though I'm not buying a vehicle just for driving in traffic

The rest of the time when I'm not relying on my transmission to determine what gear I'm in, I am always happy to push in the clutch

Owning a manual/extra clutch crap= one day replacing the clutch which is basic, never replacing the tranny because it’s just a gearbox.

Owning an auto/extra crap= “is my tranny fluid filled to the correct level?” “How will I know without having to hookup to Toyota’s mainframe?” “Oh shit the temp has to be within range or the value is null and void” “why is it shifting so weird?” “I think my tranny is cheating on me”

Manual off-roads have a hydraulic brake booster to power a-trac. Mts is a-trac. 1st gear in 4 low with no throttle is barely breaking 0mph and will “crawl” without throttle up hills.

And to elaborate on the manual transmission clutch replacement. They don't just go out on ya either. It takes a special breed to literally kill a clutch in short order.
My 1997 is still rocking the factory clutch with 218K miles on it. Why, because I understand how to use the damn thing, and what causes wear and tear. At the same time, I won't be butt hurt when it does finally loose its grip and need replacing. I'll hand the tools to my son as he changes it. I learned to change a clutch around the age of 15-16 and have changed many clutches since. And changing a clutch is roughly a one day operation and only a couple hundred bucks. Auto transmissions, you are talking thousands.

And the whole traffic thing doesn’t pertain to me because i live in the complete opposite of a big city. When driving my parents automatics, i quite frankly get very bored without a clutch and stick.
