The proof is very simple: what do the pros use in the highest levels of competition?? From trophy trucks to competative rock crawling there's a reason they all use automatics ;)

I'm actually a big fan of manuals, when I had my E46 M3 I waited months to find a proper 6spd despite KNOWING the SMG is faster by every measure. I got the 6spd because I ENJOYED it more, the difference is I didn't turn around and lie to myself about it lol.

I accepted DCTs and SMGs offer superior performance but I'd still get the new F90 with 3-pedals.

Its objective fact automatics are now superior to manuals in both performance and efficiency, this aint the 90s anymore lol. You can be just like me and still PREFER a manual, you don't need any rationalization beyond that.

New school autos are superior in some ways, but so far, they will never be superior in one thing, which is bullet proof dependability. I think a lot of us manual people appreciate the simplicity, ease of maintanance and repair as opposed to an auto.

They use automatics cause it makes it easier, not necessarily because it’s impossible with a manual transmission.

Im not sure my penis is quite as big as yours, but I will say you do not lose any capability going to a manual transmission. Crawl control is a techy neat thing for sure but you can do the same thing with a manual. The capabilities of my 17’ OR auto are the same as my old 08’ 2.7 manual. Not sure how many miles I log on or offroad but the first thing you learn on the trail is the capabilities you possess. The truck is just a tool.

They use automatics because they'd lose if they used a manual. If manuals were better for competition they'd all be using manuals. It really is that simple.

Reducing the amount of multi-tasking is what is helping the driver focus on a greater amount of ancillary tasks. It doesn't necessarily prove anything other than that.

We're not really on a level where this kind of minutia affects us.

    DIY Fabricobbler.

Using the trophy truck, and competitive rock crawler group to justify the Crawl Control feature. Errr, what? :notsure:
How about using two Toyota trucks of the same year, body style, bed length and such with only the transmissions being different.
Then compare them side by side on any trail.

And you are correct, newer automatics are more efficient than manual transmissions due to a variety of things. However, keep in mind that Toyota trucks are not the most economical of any vehicle, so to gain a whopping 2-3mpg between the two transmissions is kinda void when there are other vehicles in the same category that see better fuel economy.

Automatics have come a long way to make things sportier, and give drivers some level of control with what gear they are in with things like "Sport" mode or use of paddle shifters. And what are they trying to emulate?

    wait for it...

    The manual transmission.

Or maybe they're all too lazy or don't know how to drive a manual. I guess we'll never know unless we ask one of them. :p

This is also old school thinking. The most complex transmission Toyota makes is also the one with the lowest failure rate.... the Prius CVT. Ever seen a prius with a bad transmission?? I haven't and I worked at a Toyota dealership for 5 years, we were the go to store for san Diego's massive fleets of taxis so we saw thousands of Prii with 200k+ miles but never a transmission failure. Complex =! unreliable

Was gonna mention that, but it seemed useless to bother. These tranny’s (trophy truck) transmit power from a 2 MPG engine on a multiplexed vehicle in a way that a person focusing on a ton of things couldn’t possibly shift that fast. It’s on demand power while focusing on obstacles. I don’t race. I love to drive and play in the dirt with my truck. My peace of mind comes from the fact that I can tear down my tranny and rebuild it if need be, and I wouldn’t have to mortgage my house to do so.

    You didn't read that correctly.

The argument is autos > manuals in performance applications as evidenced by all the pros using autos.

    Nothing about crawl control...

Possibly an exception to a well established rule, but supporting your claim with personal anecdotes isn't going to help on a statistical level.

I guess analogical comparisons are over your head? :notsure:

Your claim: manuals are more reliable because they are not as complex
Counter-fact: the most complex transmission setup Toyota makes is also the most dependable
Your counter-claim: tacomas don't come with CVTs.

    lol wat

Manual transmissions in Tacomas are more dependable than automatic transmissions in Tacomas is what he was saying I think.

The notion is ridiculous, because tacomas don’t come with cvts. Tacomas don’t come with trophy truck tranny’s. They come with the factory supplied auto or factory supplied manual. A person who buys the Tacoma can choose from those two options... wat? And so far, the manual has been great to those who purchased it (still spelling this out to you) all those problems that exist with the auto don’t exist with the manual. In fact, opposed to the auto (again, the Tacoma auto, not a Prius auto... or trophy truck auto) our manual trannies are easy to service, easy to repair, and the clutch is cake to swap out IF a person needed to. That benefit by itself is worth it, aside from the “I just like it better/is more fun” justification. Your cvt in the Prius and trophy truck nonsense carried about as much weight as the same ratio of unicorns to leprechauns.
