Not as much a WTF as a reminder that humanity doesn't always suck. Which is, I suppose, a WTF in itself.

Depressed man writes letter seeking friendship, is overwhelmed with support

In December of last year, a young man wrote this message on an anonymous message forum in Europe that is similar to Yik Yak: “I am desperate to meet new friends. I’m lonely and going through the hardest period of my life. I’ll sit on the stairs in front of the town hall from 2pm to 8pm. I have black pants and a North Face bag on.”

At the time, the man had no idea if it would have any impact but the short message would end up changing his life as well as 10,000 others.

The man who wrote the note has lived more than half of his childhood in orphanages.

“An anxious upbringing with defeat, insecurity and violent assaults that have made me the person I am today; a person with very poor self-esteem and a deep inner sense of identitylessness. In September of 2016 my girlfriend of 6 years cheated on me and left me shortly after. My whole world came crumbling down and I was on the edge of suicide. I got admitted to the local psychiatric hospital but was released after an intense week of care and treatment. I never had many friends and those few I had, I stopped seeing after my now ex-girlfriend and I got together back in 2010.

So there I was – with no family, friends or girlfriend. I was all alone. And in my desperation, I decided to write and send out the message you see above.”

A lot of people read his note and 13 strangers decided to meet up and join him. (He is pictured in the bottom left.)

“I was so overwhelmed with joy, that I had to fight back tears. Many of them confided in me throughout the evening and told me that they too had felt the heartwrenching pain of loneliness, but were too afraid of reaching out because of the stigma.

This meeting went viral in Denmark and the next day I was contacted by a radio station. I was also contacted by the biggest TV stations as well as numerous papers.
At first I declined their offers, as I was afraid of the stigma and taboo, but after much serious thought, I decided to tell my story – not for myself, but for the good of others. I knew something had to be done about the increasing loneliness rates in Denmark, so I took it upon myself to make a change.”

He would go on to form a peer-to-peer network where lonely people could reach out for companionship.

He then created a 10-day relay walk from Copenhagen to Aarhus. The concept was that under no circumstances was he allowed to walk unless he was accompanied by another person. More than 70 people offered to either join him on his journey or provide food and accommodations.
“It has been almost a year and I couldn’t be any more proud of what we have achieved. I’ve dropped out of my school as a programmer to chase this crazy dream of mine and it has been the best decision of my life.”
The pictures above are some of the people that have joined him on this journey in combating loneliness.

This proves yet again that if you take the effort to reach out you will find people who are still human.

Someone needs to do a cross-country road trip with the only stipulation is that TW members have to drive in convoy with them.

And they need to come through Austin. Just saying.

Wait for it, someone will try and cash in on people being decent.

I am sad and lonely too.

If each of you would swing by GA and give me a dollar it would really cheer me up.

Or if GA is too far, you can just paypal me a dollar and that will give me at least 95% of the same joy and cheer that stopping by yourself would have, and it is easier to fit into your busy schedule.

I will also set up a GoFundMe to try and assuage my tortured psych.

All funds will go toward crystal meth, I mean, getting myself back on track :D
