Would be awesome if there was a tap on the ECU for the pass door to work like other Toyota’s with the pass smart handle. I don’t like setting the door handle to open all the door for safety, but may consider it to have the convenience. Hope someone figures it out.

I'm about to pull the trigger on buying one as well to start experimenting.
Did you order a Tacoma driver smart handle or a Highlander passenger smart handle?

Really not trying to troll here but.. I won't cry about having to reach in my pocket to unlock the passenger door when my 2018 arrives to replace my old and tired 1999 KC. I'll be thankful I won't have to ride the bus any more when my '99 is in the shop being repaired. I bet some of you guys would complain if they used a new rope at your hanging.

I wouldn't complain at all if they used a new rope. In fact, I'd prefer it! Is it too late to request them to use Synthetic winch line????

P.S-once you start using this new smart entry technology, you might understand the convenience( I didn't say need) for passenger handle.

    Well..
Good news is I have a smart handle.

Bad news is I didn't even think to check the stupid chrome strip in the middle:frusty:.
I thought it was a cosmetic strip that could be removed.. nope.
But at least I have a test smart handle I can start messing with.

It looks VERY simple. 2 pin connector that ties into the PCB Board and then out to the magnetic sensing coil.
I am going to trace the drivers door smart handle wires and do a quick tap and see if it will even work...

Could you just use the electronics in the black part of the limited driver handle and use the existing pass side outer shell? It just won’t have the door locking lines in the top and bottom. If they are interchangeable. Just a thought.

Nope. The inside of the driver side handle has been hollowed out for the clearance of the smart module. I was going to do that..

Oh well. I figured you had already thought of that. Bummer though.

I am still hoping you can figure it out.

Could try retrofitting handles from another model or manufacture, as long as the cutout on the door is close to the same or can be trimmed to fit. The Ford Edge titanium has lock and unlock for all four doors. I think it's about the same price as a TRD PRO but has just about every feature Ford offers. Thing will park itself too lol.

I have not had a chance to work on it with the holidays.
But this might be a can of worms...
The door handle is not a standard power or even high/low signal. Looks like I'll need an oscilloscope to check the wave signals

Thanks for reminding me how much get annoyed by not having the passenger door touch handle. Hopefully it will be available on newer models.
