Hey guys! Looking for some ADVICE! welp I've been doing some shopping around on the internets and I'm torn between lightweight pulleys from NST or headers.

Now, from what I've been reading there are pros and cons to both. Both, I understand, don't necessarily create power, but rather free up restrictions to make the engine more efficient and allows it to run at peak performance. Here's the deal tho. I've read that the crank pulley replaces the stock harmonic balancer. My problem with that is, wouldn't that throw the crank out of balance, in turn, potentially causing catastrophic failure? Has anyone installed these? Results?

And as far as headers go, I have read up alot on them. The general consensus that I have arrived at, is depending on the pipe size, current supporting mods, and general preference, shorties in the 1gr-fe tend to generate torque and long tube are prefered in an overall powerband increase. Well my budget doesnt allow for a 1600 dollar header set up (afe). I do have a little cash to throw around. That being said, my current set up may allow me to run catless. I have a MBRP CAT back single to dual exhaust. But I'm also running a bully dog gt gas tuner. My thoughts are, where I've adjusted the afr, timing, along with other parameters, a more free flowing exhaust, may be beneficial. I'm adding more fuel and air then the stock exhaust was ment for. If I heat wrap the headers to keep the gasses hotter and moving faster, it should make up for the decreased back pressure. Thus increasing low end potential torque. Now this is all theory at the moment. The piping of the colector will stay stock exhaust diameter. I'm also trying to avoid serious rasp as this is also my work vehicle. I am a contractor and some of my clients are extremely wealthy and frown upon being disrupted. Especially by obnoxious subs. So in order to also help, I was looking into possibly welding in a magniflow cat towards the center of the mid pipe about a foot from the cat back muffler. I know a few mechanics that would let it slide on inspections, but overall I want the best performance and I'm willing to sacrifice sound for that. Any advice will help!!

I believe these engines are internally balanced so the crank pulley isn’t like the old days when it would help balance the crank. I just can’t see the gains being worth it to just do lighter pulleys, probably won’t even feel a difference. You’ll most likely be told to supercharge to really make it worthwhile, most bang for your buck.

Thank you for the tip! Yeah I posted earlier, but I'm new to modding these engines. I'm used to less complicated. So even if I lightened the crank along with other pulleys that may cause parasitic loss, your saying price point vs actual gain is not worth it. Hmm that's disappointing. I had a 76 vette' that I did a similar mod to, along with a clutch fan delete, and electric fan replacement. I saw a decent increase in overall performance.

With modern engines there’s not much left on the table N/A. Forced induction is usually the only way to make real power gains. @OVTune just released a handheld tuner that will give you some hp and tq gains but they have not released the numbers yet. Have to wait to see if the price per HP makes sense for you.

Lol true. But in all seriousness, being a cancer patient, money isn't going to hold me back from having a little fun. Besides I'd like to build a sweet truck to pass down to my son's. Both are little gear heads, and turning wrenches with them keep my hopes high. Hey, crap happens right? I've pinched pennies my whole life. With circumstances being what they are, literally, don't have much to lose.

Well shit that sucks. I’ve lost two relatives to cancer. That’s awesome that you wanna wrench with your kids. I have a 16mo old daughter, and I hope she will join me in garage when she’s a little older. If you have a little higher budget though I would look into a supercharger, you could do a tune now and be ready for the S/C Later.

Sure does! But greatest times I've had has been passing time and knowledge to the next gen. I see a dying breed. And I wanna keep it alive. As for the S/C forced induction has always been floating around in the back of my mind. With the 6+k price tags, ugh, I'd have to sell the truck to afford one. Dying is expensive. :(. I do have the truck tuned, I went with bully dog. If I catch a break, and dive in to forced induction, I will have my local speed shop do a pro tune.

Very sorry to hear this brother. Youre tacoma legacy will live on through youre sons!

But as most have stated, noticable power gains (and fun factor!) will only be achieved with a supercharger and tuning. This would be in the $5k+ range depending on what you want to do, and you and your sons could install it!
Blower options to research (of your interested) are URD kits (centrifical type) and the Magnuson/TRD kits (roots type)
