Hello People of Tacoma world. I just bought a 2014 Tacoma TRD and I am not happy with the lack of volumn on the stereo system. I want to upgrade the sound system but don’t want to spend a lot of money. Any ideas and help would be much appreciated. Thanks

Head unit made a huge improvement in sound quality. I want to add a stealth box from JL audio, but was unsure how much rattle to expect? I know at some frequencies I already have some rattles with stock speakers. Any feed back?

I did Alpine Components up front, and Alpine rear Coaxials. A 5 Channel Alpine Amp and had Mr. Marv build all my speakers adapters and sub box. This is the Sub.

Looks like a very nice sub. Are you happy with the setup?

Yes but the neighbor's aren't, and I put the tweeters in the black triangles that cover the bolts for the mirrors.

Huge thread on this topic right now. Been running since July. LOL Lots of folks upgrade speakers alone and finding big gains.

I have $420 in my stereo upgrade. Bought everything from Crutchfield, all Kenwood. Installed it myself and the difference is amazing. I don't hear well, and couldn't hear the stock Entune at 60mph with the windows down. After the upgrade I set it between 15-17 volume level and rock out.

Unless you got the premium sound system your factory stereo, including the speakers, is junk if you actually like listening to music. Lots of good aftermarket stuff out there if you stay with the brand names and you ought to be able to fins some deals with black Friday coming up. Fortunately the factory stereo is pretty easy to upgrade; Crutchfield can be a little more expensive but they generally have good instructions with their stuff, plus tech support if you need it, and they send you the connectors to make it easier. Personally I'd plan on doing it all at once if you can swing it and I'd plan on adding some sound deadening, at least in the doors, while you're in there. The plastic clips Toyota uses suck so you really don't want to be popping them on and off any more than you have to.

I've got a double din Pioneer head unit and amp, Polk components in the front and Polk 6.5" in the rear (Access cab) and a Sound Ordinance powered sub behind the driver's seat - someone in the audio section recommended it if you didn't need a big sub and wanted to be able to remove it if needed. It does fine for me since I rarely crank my music anymore, I've already got some hearing loss from sirens and working around equipment.

One thing I'd say is to look over the controls on the head units before you buy; some of them can be a PITA to use if you're offroad i.e. small touch points on the screen. Also since mine flips out and it's mounted higher on the dash of our trucks than most cars I can't see the buttons when I open it to change disk or SD cards. Not a huge deal since you learn where they are but kind of an annoyance.

Sound deadening makes a huge difference as well
