I live in a rural area outside Albuquerque, Abq and Santa Fe are the emissions capitals in NM. Nowhere else yet.
Abq tried to make everyone that worked in Abq and lived outside get a emissions test every year. That didn't work.
If I was the op I would call Toyota first, if that didn't help, lawyer up. Enough with a recall taking forever, make them b

One thing i like about Calif is pre 76 cars you don't need to worry about smog laws . you can build the motor to whatever you want . I've seen 1800plus hp twin turbo motors and big cubic inch nitrous motors and no worries here

And with pretty much the rest of the country, you can do that to ANY year car ;)

Good friend of mine just picked up a R32 GTR, it's going to take an extra $10k to "Californiaze" it. So sad.

That sucks OP sorry to hear that. That state is crazy and to think most of the residents like living like that with a bunch of bs rules and regulations over their head. No thanks

Gather a bit of paperwork. If you can get paperwork stating that your registration is denied due to recall. Then go to your dealer and ask for them to write something up stating parts are 2 months out. Tell them you need this for DMV. Hopefully the DMV would accept a letter regarding the parts delay and an appointment scheduled once parts are available. Beyond that reach out to your local politicians.

If that didn’t work call the local news station and newspapers and have a press release ready for them regarding the situation. They love a hot story. Make sure you tape the segment, cut the articles out of the paper and forward to Toyota corporate. Do the same with your politicians. If you really feel like a prick hang out on public property just off the local dealers lot and hand out flyers detailing your experience and Toyota’s reaction.

You may not need to go this far but go one step at a time and see how they react at each step. You bought a running working vehicle which is effectively undrivable due to this recall. This is really no different in terms of use than a blown motor. In either case you are paying for a vehicle that is a paperweight until things get sorted.

I don't see how California is to blame here. The emission rules suck only because the manufacturers suck at meeting them. I don't blame California for wanting to keep the air clean. I've spend some time in China and the air quality is beyond poor. Just breathing made my lungs burn for the first 4 days I was there. Made me appreciate that we have regulations on emmissions. I only see Toyota with fault here for sourcing a shitty sensor and not having enough replacements to keep this situation from happening.

I agree. California can be a bit over the top with regulations but this wouldn't be an issue at all if Toyota had their stuff together.

While you may believe "your CO" is somehow different beyond your delusions, it is actually the SAME STATE!!!

Difficult concept to grasp, I get it.

Edit: Wait, you're not one of those nutbag sovereign citizen people are you? Because that would explain a lot.

More of a joke, but still kinda serious lol. Seems like the only Californians who come here wanna bring all their extra laws lol. You guys are way over legislated out there.
