Yup, it was a sunny day in california when it happened the second time, also the truck had been sitting for less than 5 min, only enough time for me to whoof down a taco bell burrito. I didnt even turn the truck off!

Also the first time I was able to drive forward about 10 feet, Then it seized up. This makes me think its not a parking break issue.

On a side note, apparently taco bell is the healthiest fast food chain now when you order off the "Cantina" Menue

Another quick thing to mention. The service manager basically wrote me off when I asked about my vibrating hood and adhesive separation. He stated that it looked exactly like the other trucks on the lot (which is total BS). When I picked it up I pointed out that the hood adhesive was clearly not bonded between the hood and the hood frame. He acknowledged it and said that we should take it to a body shop and send them the bill. (one little victory)

On a side note i got between 21-22 mpg on my MT on the trip to tahoe and back to SF.

Just wanted to update the thread. After several more frozen brake incidents I brought it back to Toyota in july, now out of warranty. They told me for over a week that they can't address the issue because if they acknowledge that there is there an issue then they would be liable for the issue. I have no idea how that makes any sense!?!? I basically had to scream at the service manager to convince him it was an issue. For crying out loud, the damn truck was towed in for this issue! How can you not acknowledge that there is an issue??? At one point they tried to convince me that I was using the truck in a capacity that it wasn't designed for. I asked the guy if driving in the snow or using a fresh water launch ramp was outside of normal truck operations. The service manager told me that he " doesn't have the opportunity to live that kind life." I responded "Do you not have the opportunity to drive through a carwash? Because last time I did that my truck had to be towed in."

Long story short after a lot of bitching on the phone and weeks of letting my truck sit there (I was out of town anyways) they replaced the rear shoes and drums. No issues since :)

OMG that dealer sounds terrible. Btw, military hmmwv's use 4 wheel inboard disk brakes and while they are not sports cars the brakes work well off-road. After reading this I'm probably going to service my drums once a year.

For what it's worth, I've had a rear drum seize up 4 or 5 times after washing the truck. Nothing to do with temperature, just flash rust. I've always been able to break it loose by rocking things or just torquing through it. Never actually dragged a tire.

FWIW if I'm not mistaken, the rear brakes are leading shoe, so they aren't as strong in reverse. If this happens (to the OP or anyone else) you might be able to free them up more easily by trying to back up.

It was happening to the point that the truck was completely immovable after only a couple min. I tried rocking and everything. Not happened once since they replaced everything. I'm guessing defective shoes.
