I can't help since I don't have one, but I sure would like to hear peoples' opinions too; this and the smaller version look like nice tents. I don't think I've seen them on anyones trucks in the 'post your pics of camping etc' threads, perhaps because they haven't been on the market all that long. Good price for a 3 person, and nice that it doesn't weigh 250 lbs. some real innovation in these RTTs would be nice, theres so many options but I'm not convinced they aren't all 90% the same. And I guess it was only a matter of time before REI started selling RTTs (Tepui tents too it looks like).

I'd be curious to hear about materials quality. Lighter is not always a good quality.

Stay away!!!! Tent feels cheap you can see it at an REI and has the smallest weight limit I've seen for a rtt and basically the rei sales rep told me Yakima voids all warranties if it's not on their racks..

yeah no doubt about that. but I think its lighter because its made out of regular tent material, rather than like rubberized canvas. So yeah, maybe not as durable, but I usually get at least a decade out of tents made out of lighter fabric. I guess I'd be more concerned about the fabric being loud in the wind since its not kept as tight as regular tent kept taught with poles.

here's a review that Expedition Portal posted about a year ago. its not particularly useful tho.

lame of them, and entirely unsurprising.

I almost bought it at the last rei sale the opportunity to walk away with a name brand RTT for 700 was tempting but after I finally got the rep to give me specs and warranty info I walked away with ease.

Most of the reviews I read during REIs last sale were not very good. Lots of reports of leakage.

I'd entertain one during a sale once they get their ducks in a row. Yakima makes pretty solid equipment and this is their first attempt into the RTT market.

Glad to see something about this, also kinda sad.
I have had really great things from REI over many years. Guess this just won't be one of them.
The weight and leaking issues are two things that are a turn off. I like to sleep and wake up dry.

But at the same time I don't understand why RTT's need to be made out of thick canvas. I have "thin" ground tents that that have lasted me through years of abuse (rocks, mud, etc.) RTT's never seen any of that.

    Anyways, I love my CVT.

Slept in an RTT a few times. I did not think I'd want one made of normal materials.

A ground tent can be replaced cheaply. An RTT costs a lot more and you can just replace the fabric. If it tears the whole thing is basically a loss.

Older post...I know...but I've had my Yakima SkyRise 3 for about 3 months now...a couple of overloading trips and about 3 regular camping trips. No sure if people are not setting these up right or not, but the 3 times we went camping it absolutely poured rain...we had zero leaks. I haven't even had any problems with condensation! Maybe I have a newer version?? But I've had no issues. Super easy to set up and break down.

I will say that the ladder laying on on the bottom of the tent while transporting needs to be changed. I put some grip tape where the ladder is, and it solved that problem. No issues from my end.

When I camp in Utah or Arizona, often, the winds kick up to 45+mph. And you still gotta sleep.

Anything that high off the ground and non-aerodynamic, would be hell in a wind storm.

Get a decent ground tent with a fly that can be staked into ground or tied to rocks.

U know how hard it is to climb down at 3AM to take a wiz, and then climb back up with that car/tent setup?

Its like folks are afraid of the ground or something.

Rattlesnakes and tarantulas only hunt during daylight.

Nothing wrong with the yak. I picked one up on sale last spring. I was looking for a lighter and cheaper RTT and this one does check the boxes. On and off is a breeze compared to some of the other well known brands - no tools needed (and I'm not one to leave my RTT on the rig when not in use). No complaints. I've enjoyed three trips in the Sierras so far. Very comfortable and a snap to set up.

I purchased the SkyRise 2 because a buddy of mine has the SkyRise 3 and loves it.

The first trip I used it on I had leaks from all corners. My buddy was parked right next to me the same night had no leaks with his 3.

I wouldn't feel very comfortable with that on my truck cap. The amount of torque put on it by a person climbing in and out has got to shorten the life of the cap.

?? When you climb up on to it, the ladder takes all of the weight...These shells can withstand 200+ dynamic weight...static is even higher. People have been doing this for years...

camped a lot in my time....and this is just another way of doing things...I absolutely love it. If I'm going with my family and extended family, we will bring larger tents...but if I'm going on an overlanding trip or an off road trip, I use this.
