We bought a house that needed work but we could live in, not a total gut job. We saved a ton of money. I took a couple weeks off when we first bought the house and tackled some of the immediate and dirty work before we moved our stuff in. Then just picked away at it over the years. We've considered selling it recently and we have a decent amount of equity now.

We were there from day one. It had very few "needs". New breaker panel, some furnace work, and the rest was all cosmetic.

Current house had nothing too bad either. It was owned by the same people for 50 years. Just before the guy got really sick, he replaced most of the windows and the roof and put all new vinyl siding on it. Right around the time he died, his wife went into a nursing home. The house sat empty for a couple years, and when she died the kids sold it. The last guy caught up on most of what needed to be done in the two years he had it (mostly interior cosmetic stuff), then I bought it and have been plugging away at the rest. Not much at this point.

That sounds very similar to the house I bought. We bought it from the son of the original family that built it and owned it since 1906. The son was old, blind and living alone. Structurally, the house was in great shape, newer windows, fully insulated and the boiler was in good shape with full service records. The interior, however, hadn't been updated since sometime in the 70s or 80s. We gutted the kitchen and a back room, re-roofed a small back section of the house and tore out all the old carpeting. After that initial push was completed, we've just been picking away at small interior stuff ever since. Last summer, I finally put some attention on the yard.

Thats what I would like to do for a first house, unless I'm still single when I buy one then garage and small living space is all I need. Still just starting to look into prices and such for when the time comes a couple years down the road

That doesnt sound too bad then, I just need to save up for a down payment and see what is around and fits my needs/wants

Damn... Apple Brandy goes really well with cider also. Where do you have to go to get Everclear around here? Got someone coming in from out of state (I don't ever recall seeing Everclear in MA).

I saw the pictures from the listing when the last guy bought it. Shag carpet everywhere! Even the kitchen. The bathroom was pink and had this weird sit-down tub too. He replaced that with a normal one and tore out the kitchen island and all the carpeting in the kitchen, dining room and hallways and put down laminate.

The original owner was a contractor. Some stuff is really well done, I'm told the structure is overbuilt to the point of craziness. Other stuff I find pretty funny.

You can get it in NH but you have to order it. I've used it to make lemoncello.

My realtor hated the fact that I was buying a 2 bedroom house, but it's 1500 sq ft plus a full basement and the 24x24 garage. Almost all of it is "common space". Two large living rooms with a fireplace in each, large kitchen and dining room, master bedroom is a good size, the second is smaller. It's actually excessive for me, being single and not wanting kids. The second living room is just my office and the second bedroom just has a futon and an end table in it.

One of the houses I lost out on was about 800 sq ft and was kind of halfway between a hunting cabin and a house. It was so cool--the master bedroom was a loft, it had a massive deck, 20 acres, etc. But it's for the best. I needed to add an actual heating system and would have needed a tractor to clear the 1/4 mile long driveway and take care of the 4 acres of lawn. Money would have started to become an issue.

At least you have the extra space if you ever needed it for anything though! Depending, it might just be my dog and I

Wife just got the new car seat installed for our youngest, in her car. Did mine last week, had to wait for the one for hers to come in, so she went to the PD today and got it done.

Said the cop remembered doing mine last week. Peeps remember the Taco.

A few years ago ,I made a "Cherry Beverage" containing Everclear ,brown sugar, cherry juice and a couple jars of Morello Cherries.
I put it in a gallon wine jug with one of those wine making vents and let it perk for a month.
Couple times the cherries were moving around like a lava lamp.
Came out pretty good after filtering and the cherries were a good ice cream topping.
