Tell me I'm right that something's not right - Body Mounts

Hopefully I'm posting in the correct place.... if not, put me in mine.... as I am sure you will....
Story -
I had a mechanic install these cuz I was intimidated by the bolt breakage factor & whilst I do much of my own stuff, I don't have the wherewithal to deal with that. Whelp the mechanic did indeed have some break. Looks like four. Now correct me if I'm wrong here. One is not supposed to reuse the original bolts, as he did in the back two, right?
So the story goes, all seemed ok until I noticed it wasn't. I checked the front end bushings & the passenger side was bulging. Brought it by for him to look at & I politely mentioned something about assuming he torqued them to spec. He said they were lock bolts, so no need. He loosened one or two a pinch. Oh, & the top bushings were squashed/bulging in the middle & back mounts on the passenger side. Driver's side seemed ok.... At the time. Not so good now.
So he & I discussed it & agreed that something was up with the kit & I would order a replacement.
This morning I decided to really check them out cuz something just wasn't adding up. Routed around, took some pics & now I need confirmation if I need to confront this guy or advice if the install looks ok, so maybe it's something else.
So I already have the one "correct me if I'm wrong" in the first paragraph. Another would be, those other 4 bolts are not lock or pre-torqued, correct? & there should not be that much difference in how much bolt is showing after they are tightened, correct?
Driver, passenger alternating. I believe he loosened the passenger front & middle, so nut was tighter in fourth pic....

Hi Kristi .

How do the body lines look from the outside of the truck ? do the doors line up with the box ? does the front clip line up with front doors or is all uneven ?
Sometimes to get the truck straight on the outside , you have to make adjustments to the body mounts from underneath the truck . It could explain why some of the mounts are tighter than the others or more collapsed .
Was this done for a body lift or for body mount replacement ?

 

Sorry for the delay. Had to restart comp. Anywho, I kind'a forgot a sort'a important part that caused me to realize that something wasn't right to start with. I actually thought at the time that maybe there was something else wrong. The body is touching the frame directly behind the middle mount, passenger side. This was going on pre mount change & did improve a little post change, however now it's pretty much back to NG. Sorry. No pics. I can try with a flash if needed. Also, passenger door now has a little shift up in order to close. & I think that here & there, there is a little slip/clunk, reminds me the same feel/noise that came from needing the main carrier bearing before I changed that, only its coming from the front end passenger side. & this is not a lift. The mounts were shot & I mean shot. Took me a bit to figure out what it was cuz I needed struts & thought that's what it was.

 

theres a metal sleeve that the washer will bring up in. you cant overtighten these. they are designed to preload the bushing a little bit actually. torque specs on them are 35ish ftlbs.


edit: there SHOULD be a metal sleeve if assembly correctly.

 

Yes , if the body is riding on the frame you will get a lot of droning noise when driving the truck . The body shouldnt be touching the frame anywhere .
Did you question the technician that installed the new mounts ?

 

Yes. I did question him, but just about the torquing. He said they lock so no need to. & as Devin pointed out there are the sleeves. They were in the kit, so I imagine he used them. So now I see that it is not the bolt, but the sleeve that sets the torque. I am pretty mechanically inclined, however learning bit by bit. It's typically the light dawning on marble head that leads me to the next thing in line. Got the struts done & then said to myself, "Self, that wouldn't change a darned thing as far as the frame to cab height goes." So researched just what causes them to remain separate & boila....

 

Ok. Well wait a minute. If he used the sleeves, then why the difference in bolt left overage as in the first two pics?

 

2 of the 6 bolts are 1/2" longer. looks like he used new bolts for the rest. one of those are probably the longer bolts (would normally go to the very front mounts)

 

So you're "sayin'" that the two used bolts are most likely different lengths? I am so trying to make sense of this. Not necessarily pin it on the mechanic. I mean what's the point of replacing these new ones if I have no idea why the fix didn't work to start with? It should have done something more than lift the cab off the frame for a minute. I have routed around under the truck & can't see any rust issues that might cause sinkage or anything like that. There is also the fact that now the door has to push up in order to close. I don't mean I have to lift it. It's not that bad, but it does have to shift up to close. I guess tomorrow I'll take off the nuts & double check that he used the sleeves. & I'll post some cab to frame pics. Maybe that'll help....

 

id like to see pics of top part of mounts and where the cab is touching.

 

K. I'll try for the top of the mount as best I can (tight fit for camera aimage). & affirmative on the cab to frame pics....

 

I ordered a new body mount kit and it was not what I needed. position #2 and #3 have different part numbers but are the same size. I had to have a second set of position #2 bushings sent to me to correct the issue. My advice would be to take a good look at the position of the body on the frame. The person who put them on may have mixed them up thinking they were all the same. My original mounts pictured have correct part numbers matching a parts list that I got from local Toyota parts dealer. Notice the red mounts in front are not as thick as the ones in the rear. The ones in the rear are position #2. front are position #3. This is the result I got.

 

it says in the daystar kit this only applies to 01-04 and it tells you to flip the mounts for them to work either way.

 

I would pay attention to the original mounts. how thick and placement. My kit had me putting the wrong mount in.

 

Had a bit of trouble getting at the middle passenger upper bushing. Couldn't squeeze in like the driver's side. I messed with the pic to try & get it to show it. I also took measurements if this helps at all. Lemme know. Does anyone know how long the sleeves are?

I got the

$124 energy suspension 8.4107g body mount set for toyota

energy suspension 8.4107g. Got good reviews, etc.
I measured as best I could from top of mount to the bottom & both middles & rear driver came in at 2 in. The rear passenger actually came in a little higher. I have 2 3/4 written - k. I'm going to stop here & go remeasure all. I can't read my writing. It's cold out so it's hard to write.... Alright. Yeah, my writing sucks.... Plus I am not organized so it's chicken scratched on an old bus. card I found in the truck. Back in a few.

 

Not really following. Looks like we got the same? kit type. The rear top bushing would be clearly higher, correct? Or are you referring to the bottom bushing making a dif?

 

I can see on one of the pics I took today that there is a 4244 stamped in the middle bottom bushing. Is this what you mean?

I did this myself, and I can tell you that if you're not paying attention and fully engaged in this, you can definitely mess this project up. Also, there is absolutely a torque spec on all the nuts/bolts for those body mount bushings. I can't remember what they are off the top of my head- but they are in the factory manual.

ok. Soooo.... 4244 on both middle & rear driver. 4246 on middle passenger. The number on the rear I can't get to. My guess would be it's 4246. & although it's difficult to measure the whole mount with the bracket & all, there's definitely a decent amount of discrepancy. @36tacundra I imagine this is what you were referring to....
