that came out awesome often paying gigs push you further that you expect.

My latest project made the head a little too big for the handle but it has a great feel when using the chisels. trying my hand at hand cut mortise and tenon joints. Here is my cherry and hard maple joiners mallet.

    ...update on bookshelves project...

..hard parts done: cases, shelves, and now affixed to walls... cases adjoined together w/out any screw/nail penetrations in the side...

    specs:
    - cases: maple plywood
    - shelves: maple plywood w/ hard maple edging
    - finish: several coats of minwax wipe-on poly...
    - all shelves are adjustable, fixed shelves at midpoint/top/bottom of cases

    up next:
    - base-trim (and add low-volt box for new coax jack)
    - base access (drawers, or false doors?) ...useable space in there!
    - face-frame and side panels
    - crown
    - cove lighting (LED strip)

...case backs are 1/2" plywood, painted same color as wall, ...fools the eye! ..turns out i made a few too many shelves, ...final "arrangement" TBD... will stock w/ books, but also decor stuff...

How did you join the edging? Where did you get the LED puck lights?

    Beautiful work

    thanks!

...the hardwood edges were glued to the plywood, plus joinery using 5 or 6 dominos (i.e. small floating tenons), ...the latter was mainly for the glue-up process, ensuring the top surfaces of the hardwood and the plywood would be a flush as possible... worked great!

...the LED downlights are the armacost brand sold from lee valley:
    http://www.leevalley.com/us/hardware/page.aspx?cat=3,43349,72177&p=72190

what's neat is each comes w/ a series of diffuser/filters that you can use to customize the light output, ..trim rings are purchased separately, ..i just looked, they now have added an RGB color-changeable version of this light...

Major score this weekend. I was surfing CL last week and found a guy selling a bunch of lumber cheap. $400 for the lot or individual species for set prices, mixed hard and soft; planed and rough. I thought it was sold as I didn't here from the guy until the end of the week. He had calculated over 450 bf total. So I went and picked it up yesterday with me neighbors trailer. When I calculated it out it was just shy of 1000 bf (unfinished dimensions).

I couldn't tell what some of the rough was so I ran a few pieces through the planer quick. It's mostly maple and cherry.
I ended up with a pile of cherry (plus the 200 bf I already have), maple, oak, chestnut and some knotty pine.

Cut the kerfs with a back saw. Laminated 1/4 inch ebony fretboard blanks together and then cut the splines at the miter saw. I had to sand them individually to get the final fit, then applied hide glue and inserted into the kerfs. Pain in the ass, but I like them.

So if you are planing a panel, do you need to sand it? I'm making a little tv stand for my grandfather and while I was evening out some of the edges I noticed that there was a remarkably smooth finish where I planed it. Full disclosure, this is the first time I've used a plane. I've been reading up on them and have built a small collection. It is a small block plane that I used. I have the sharpen and hone the rest of the collection.

I usually can go from a planed or scraped surface directly to a 220/250 sandpaper. It's usually needed to roughen up the surface for finish prep. I rarely start standing below 220 or so.
