I also have an old laptop laying around, but it would need a hard drive and OS installed on it.

 

Can you get a chromebook for under 300? Not sure if it has webcam. Tis the season for deals on laptops, so i would be scouring the black friday/cyber monday deals. Check best buy, costco, Amazon, etc.

Is the old laptop repairable? If its just the hard drive that died, those are usually fairly simple to swap out if it still meets your requirements

I had a lot of old hardware collecting in my house, tablets, laptops, etc. Very cheap to refurbish and sell, plenty of starving students in need of computer stuff for college.

Wasn't a bad side gig.

 

I also have an old laptop that can be donated if you absolutely need it. I aint gonna lie, its slow. It has windows 10 home installed on it, but its from 2008 and is a dual core pentium. No built in webcam but those are cheap to buy. Wifi is the older 802.11n i think, but still works fine.

Edit: battery life is nada. Has to stay plugged in at all times.

 

Just use fresh hard drives, or wipe the old ones. Single pass of zeros is sufficient. I cant believe the amount of data that can be found on used hard drives.

 

Yeah, I usually bought a new HD. Old ones get used for target practice, then melted down.

 

I collect old androids and use them for distributed computing. I crunch workunits that help try to find cures for cancer, aids research, etc.

Another good option is put the drive resting between two cinder blocks and hit it with a sledge so it bends through the middle.

I did that for awhile, I think I have around 2 or 3 tablets right now that can probably do it again. I figure once I get a bigger place to live I can get a nice home server setup and make my house "smart."

 

to repair the laptop would be a crazy task.
I killed it on purpose. it aint coming back.
