I have an SR5 Tacoma - 2x4, nothing fancy except I put TRD Offroad wheels and tires on it. 15k miles

I'm looking at a 2016 TRD Sport 4x4 (30k miles) with (upgrades for me):
    4x4
    Leather (nice orange stitching)
    Dual climate control
    JBL audio
    Sunroof
    Tonneau cover
    Bed Extender

Only down side is I'm losing a lifetime powertrain warranty from the toyota dealship I bought it from.

They came to $4,500 out the door and I'm sticking to my guns at $4,000. They have already called me and offered $4500 over the phone after they initially wanted $6500.

    Thoughts?

I think the only things to keep in mind is:

    1. No rear power sliding glass window
    2. 2016 had the majority of transmission issues, although still evident in 2017, you have a higher chance of have an issue in the short term.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the tranny recall was for 2017s only, not 2016s.

OP, isn't the powertrain warranty transferrable?

You could be wrong, you could be right. I was fortunate enough to currently have no recalls so it's not something I spent time researching.

Spending $ to go back one year and up 15k. Seems odd at first blush.

4wd is the big difference, right? You didn't call that out as an upgrade.

Same dealer you bought the '17 through? See if you can twist their arm on the warranty. Surely the '16 is a CPO vehicle. Maybe they can rewrite or transfer. It's the same driveline, and if it's a 'dealer' warranty, they should be able to do whatever they want.

I'd certainly want that on that driveline. Too many unknowns still to be revealed over time.

The lifetime powertrain warranty isn't transferable. The toyota dealership (toyota of Cool Spring in TN) offers it on most of their vehicles for free.

Clearwater Bill, I did mention 4x4 as an upgrade for me... but no, not the same dealer.

If they call me back agreeing to the $4k, I will likely swindle a powertrain warranty out of them for at least a year...

    Thanks for the tips.

    #1 - I don't have that with SR5.
#2 - the main thing that has me concerned (tranny issues in general).

2017 has the same tranny, maybe a computer flash which the 16s eventually got.
A few had tranny fluid low in early production and then paranoia struck and everyone thought they were low.
2016 is the same as 2017.
    And probably 2018.

Because I will never buy a new vehicle again... dumbest decision I've made in a long time.

Should be able to get a prorated refund on that warranty and the gap insurance if you have it.

I know what you mean, i was looking for a resonably priced
used truck for over two years. but because they wanted almost
new truck prices, it only made sense to get new for a few thousand more.
some of the used trucks were selling for more than new. crazy
supply and demand in my area i guess.

Exactly... if I had waited about year, I would have found what I wanted (TRD sport or OR 4x4) at the same price as my sr5 was new.

Late model used Tacoma's usually don't sell for much less than new ones.

They are come down a good bit. The one I'm looking at is 32k and a new one I just built on toyotas web site with the same options is 38k.

I have a 2016 SR5 and I had the tranny TSB taken care of at about 6-8k miles and now have over 20k on it and it is great. The rear end recall was taken care of and no other issues, I put the shiftsense pro on the tranny and it helps a lot..runs great and love it

Depends on what it’s worth to you. For most of my driving life I’ve thought 4x4 was useless and preferred to cruise Bro style, long travel, high speed in places where I could get away with not having 4x4. Now that I’ve had a need for 4x4, I won’t go back. I’ve lost that love and feeling. Now I’m all like F UUUUUUUUUU

    4x4 FOREVERRRRRRRRR
