Spent the day chasing a noise in my truck. I have what I sounds like a dry wheel bearing, but the sound comes and goes. It doesn't seem to change with turns, braking, etc. I just had the driveshaft serviced and I removed both my dust shields...so neither of those are the culprit. I had Kauffman Tire check the wheel bearing this morning when they put new tires on, they said the bearings were quiet and that it was something maybe in the differential. I went to the dealership and after 3 hours, they say that it is the wheel bearing or "thats the place to start".

Shits been driving me crazy all day! If it was a wheel bearing wouldn't the sound be there constantly and change with sharp turns?

Not certain if this helps but I have a bearing noise from when I swapped my dif for an 8" it's growly off throttle and seems to be quiet at a neutral speed. I'm certain its loud under power but due to straight pipes makes it a little difficult. I believe it to be the pinion walking in and out of the crown under different loads due to a fubar bearing. Loads one bearing on deceleration and the other on acceleration. Good luck with the bearing hunt...

You know, your post reminded me that my diff used to make insane noises too until I swapped trucks. I think it was the pinion bearing or super relaxed preload. I'd see about measuring your backlash first.

Yeah I had the shaft off and stethoscope all over that carrier and it is guaranteed a bearing. The dif has 280km or so on it and I knew the previous owner and their maintenance schedule was more of a it's good until it explodes... bearing set isn't bad for price. Labor is free other than the case of beer it's going to take to do.

Yeah it is the install cost that kills ya with diffs though.

Going to end up at the mechanic most likely BUT.

the past week or so I had been feeling a clunking noise on the drivers side when i am rolling at low speeds, turning. and sometimes after coming to a stop.

Any idea what this might be?

Anything hanging where it shouldn't be? Do you hear a sound when you start it up or just after you've been moving and come to a stop?

looks like everything is good. My skid plate looks really close/touching the steering rack inside past the boots.. should there be a little space?

Is it lower on one side? There's usually some space, I'll check mine when I get a chance.

I have a double cab and I remember being in the back seat not having a light. When I installed the new smoked 3rd brake light, I had the headliner down. I installed a second dome light at the rear of the cab. It lights up pretty darn good now. Here is the result.DSC00493.jpg DSC00495.jpg DSC00496.jpg

Does anyone have any pics of Relentless transfer/Trany skid plate installed on a 1st Gen? I'm looking to get the set (IFS and the trany/transfer) but I can't find any pics installed on the truck.

@RelentlessFab was quick to help me out thanks.

If it's a wheel bearing you should be able to grab at 12 and 6 and give it a push/pull. If you have any play the bearing is likely it.

Yeah...there is no movement in the wheel at all that I can see. I'm at a complete loss with it.

If the outer shoulder is wearing, most likely your camber is off, although it can be caused by toe-in as well. I shoot for 0* of camber and 0* of toe, that will keep your tires perfectly straight and vertical on the road, which will reduce tire wear and maximize gas mileage. A little bit of negative camber and positive toe is ok too, it will help the truck center-seek and corner better.
