So I guess I am half way there?

I've lurked on this site for many months planning to upgrade to a next gen Taco or the 4runner.

Well, I came across a 1999 4runner SR5 V6 auto 4wd with rear diff lock and brace yourselfs... 163k! from a local dealer. It does not look it though, its a one owner local Oregon truck (no rust), havent seen any dents or really any door dings. Has matching VIN tags all around and I havent found any evidence of paint work. Has a cheezy Toyota bug guard on the hood, but I think it help save it from road rash. interior has minimal wear, especially on the drivers side seat bolster so I assume (and hope) that it has mostly highway miles.

Anyway, it seems to run pretty darn good and had the following done:

    Timing belt 95k
Dealer just completed - brakes all the way around, new pwr antenna, starter, battery, tranny fluid flush, claeaned T-body and MAF, and a few other things.

    I got $22,500 for trade in on my 2009 Nissan Frontier SE Crew Cab 4x4 (paid $22,200 brand new a year ago) - $200 to swap tires over (brand new 265/75 Duratrac's) = $22,300 - $12,700 still owed = $9600 - $8887 for the 4runner = $713 - DMV fees = $561 check to me.

Retail book on it was around $9100. Another 4runner I was looking at was selling for $1k above book with no negotiations. That dealer was going to give me $20k for my truck. Scoring great deals on Toyota's isnt easy, especially when you have a trade.

If I can squeeze 50k out of this truck I will be happy as it would take me at least 6 years to do that. I know some issues will arise and money will need to be spent, but I can squirrel away what I was paying for payments and interest to cover that.

Anyway, Trading in was in no way bagging on the Frontier's as they are still bad *** trucks and I still like them better than the 2nd gen taco's. However I like the simplicity of older vehicles and the fact that I am debt free aside from my mortgage is a nice feeling :)

I know "this thread is worthless w/o pics". Just dont have any yet.

The dealer has been pretty cool about some stuff. After I bought it I found out the CD player didnt work and their was a nasty vibration on the freeway in the front end. After we swapped my tires over it seems to have gone away, apparantely there was a flat spot on the old tires. Also had a a few times where it was difficult to start when warm and while the dealer couldnt duplicate it, they cleaned the MAF and throttle body. I also noticed that their was green coolant in the radiator so they went ahead and flushed the system. All was done for customer satisfaction. It is getting an aftermarket CD player installed as I type. Its good that they are taking care of all these issues, but I am suprised that they didnt notice when doing the 79 point used car inspection.

And yes, debt free plus $560 in my pocket from dealer.

Alright, finally got some pics the other day. Since then a few things have changed. Finally had a chance to get the pinstriping off, removed bug guard (been on since new, and it worked as there is barely any roadrash on the front end) and trimmed the front lower portion of the rear flares. Be easy, keep in mind it does have 163k!

I have always loved that body style of the 4runners. My wife is wanting to get a 4runner when she completes her Grad school. I keep trying to talk her into getting an older model, but she is hell bent on a brand new one with a monthly payment. But baby gets what baby wants....i guess.

Yea, I know. Its a 99' so it has the e-locker which is cool. Its a little quirky so I am trying to get everything dialed before I start spending money on mods.

I am pretty sure I will go with OME suspension for a few inches of lift. Not sure how much I will get as the 99' already sits higher than all the other 4runners. Tires are brand new 265/75/16's and dont know if they will look goofy with a small lift. The wheels suck too, would like to find a nice set of the 5 spoke ones that came on the limited models. Will probably rattle can these a charcoal grey color in the meantime.

    Opinions?

Nice truck. My wife has an 02, same body style. 177,000 and still purring like the day it was new. I like those wheels, I had them on my 97 Tacoma. I didn't know they made them in 16", mine were 15. Is it a standard shift? hard to tell from the picture. When we were looking in 02 they had stopped putting standards in 4Runners. Good luck with it.

I had a 2000, I loved it. I had a set of 99' coils on it to give it a little lift. I had to get rid of it when gas hit $4 a gallon a couple years back. I also had the same wheels you did, then got a hold of some 5 spokes, had them powder coated, and switched them out.

I would not touch it. It's beautiful as it sits. Nothing like a good, solid stock tacoma or 4runner.
