Possibly trading in 2017 4x2 for 2016 4x4 - what'er your thoughts?

I strongly disagree. Buying a 2 year old Tacoma is not a wise move compared to just buying new. Do the math and figure the cost/mile to drive new vs used for 10-15 years. Tacoma's hold their resale value so well that it doesn't make sense to buy a 2-3 year old truck. For only $2000-$3000 more you can be in a new one. On most cars or SUV's it makes economical sense to buy used. Not so with trucks, especially Tacoma's

It is trading every 5 years or less that is foolish and where you are. I'd advise keeping what you have for at least 5 years. The cheapest way to own a vehicle is to pay no more than 2 weeks pay for a used clunker and drive it until it won't go anymore. Don't spend a dime on repairs, just drive it until it quits and sell it to a junkyard for 1/2 what you paid and start over.

The 2nd cheapest way is to buy one and and keep it until it is 15-20 years old. In the long run it works out about the same buying new or used, but if you buy used you end up trading more often than just buying new. The key is to keep it until it is a minimum of 10 years old and 15-20 is better.

The most expensive way to drive is to trade every 5 years or less. Doesn't matter if you buy new or used.

Most any truck driven 10 years or 150,000 miles will sell for 1/2 what the original purchaser paid; and it would be rare to spend any money for anything other than routine stuff. After 10 years the guy who buys it has as much in it as the original purchaser and he gets to pay for all the repairs.

See my previous post. They are now asking $30,545 for their 16 TRD Sport 4x4 (with added leather, all bells and whistles etc) and they have agreed to an out the door difference of $4,000 for trading. While yes, I will agree that me buying a truck and trading it is foolish, won't argue there, but I made a mistake (that won't happen again). For the price of the 2017 SR5 that I bought, I could have a 2016 TRD Sport with 30k miles. A new TRD Sport with tech package and 4x4 will be no less than $38+k

My only hesitation now is losing the lifetime powertrain warranty.

Does anyone know what a powertrain warranty would cost on a 2016 tacoma with 30k miles? Never purchased one myself.

All depends. Used Tacoma's around here were $2-3k with 10k+ miles on it. That's a full year of ownership for me. Didn't make sense.

Now, what I won't do again is to buy a new truck with all the bells and whistles. Ok, I like the rear sonar and seat warmers. But I can do without. Doing it over again, I would just go with a SR/SR5 and call it good.

You are a car dealer's dream. Look close at your sales guy's eyes next time you're in there--you may see $ signs. :) I wouldn't bother with the warranty. Most likely, you will end up selling the truck within 5 years. The chance of blowing up the engine within that period is miniscule. The warranty companies know this. So do car dealers. Your warranty money is just extra income for them.

You paying $4K, losing lifetime powertrain warranty and going a year model back just to having 4wd. No thanks imo LOL. Normally I'd say a 2wd Tacoma wouldn't be near my driveway, but this case is different.

You would think at 42 I would know better and would be more patient for what I'm wanting. See, I'm the opposite, I think $30k for a plane ol truck (without bells and whistles or 4x4) is a waste when there are plenty of good trucks for 10k less... (not just tacomas).

The toyota transferrable warranty for the powertrain is 5 years or 60k miles... I would probably be fine and if something were to go wrong, surely it would happen within that time frame.

Well, it's not just to have the 4x4, it's the fact that I paid over 30k for a truck that would do the same as a truck 10 - 15 years old... the added $4k in my opinion would justify spending over $30k for a truck...

I have that exact same thought whenever I buy a vehicle. I go in initially thinking I'll get a stripped down version, then come out with a decked out model. Next time, though...... :D

Who backs up the powertrain warranty and have you read the small print on it?

I know of somebody who bought an extended powertrain warranty but when the radiator hose let go the engine overheated. It ended up damaging something on the engine (I don't recall). Anyway, warranty wouldn't cover it because the radiator hose was not part of the warranty per the small print. Since something not in warranty was the root cause of the issue, the engine repair wasn't covered.

$30.5k seems lower than "book" price. A clean title? Not a salvage or anything? Or a truck from the recent hurricanes?

That's true about the warranty... they will always find loop holes to weasle out of it.

I'm inquiring on a carfax. The original selling dealer is local to me... I will look and make sure it wasn't flooded. Good call though.

Ah, I see what you're saying. That's a tough call, I know I like having 4x4 for sure.

OP - I can see your reasoning because you're getting the higher trim level with much more stuff than what you have for a good price. Seemingly a win-win.

That warranty will be pro rated and you should get some cash'ola back. Unless another warranty comes from Toyota Corp, I really probably most likley wouldn't do it.

Hurricane flood cars are starting to seep into the market now. My local news just did coverage on it as a consumer alert. I missed it but will find it and post it on this thread.

Definantly run a CarFax to find out if it came from an auction. My local dealer get's alot of used third gens this way. I'd be leary of buying one that came from an auction.

Toyota of Murfreesboro does the life time warrenty thing as well. I think it is likely a sales gimmick and when push comes to shove I don't think it would be very useful in the event you are out of the 5 year 60k timeframe.

I personally wouldn't worry about losing the warrenty. You paid nothing for it and that probably about what it's worth

A back step for when I get older, Carhartt seatcovers, 4Runner wheels, Topper, and "tats all folks"! --for now!!
I would not do that! Get someone to give you the best deal you can get on a 18 SR5 4x4 and try like hell to sell yours outright -- I have been watching yours -- you have been trying here (a long time)-- but elsewhere? like other places where 4X2's are not a detriment? --other locations on craigslist? I am thinking you are in a place (Tn. ) where every good ole boy has to have a 4x4! right? I understand -- Me from Mo -- I love mine -- have to have it!!?? NO ! I do haul wood out of the country - have to ? probably not -- do I want 4x4 -- heck yes! My advice -- hang in there -- sell yours yourself then get your 4x4 -- if it is a Toyota --new -- something else --maybe used! just remember dealers --especially New car dealers make more off of their used than their new ones. If they tell u anything to the contrary --they are lying through their teeth--PERIOD!!
Average of 2500 -3500 is left on the table by the purchaser when they trade in --THIS IS FACT!

PS -- I have the same "3rd party" "free lifetime warranty" on power train my dealer here in central Mo uses it heavily in their ads. Good or bad or gimmick -- I do not know --but as another said -- remember - you paid nothing for that.
Also if you want some connects to 2 good dealin' dealers in Central mo -- I could do some pre-work for you -- just PM me. they matched each other on my SR5-- I went with my closest one -- 3 miles away

I've been trying to sell it on Craigslist and had it on cars.com a couple of times and the only bites were people asking 25k for it. Trade in value is around 28k in prestige condition, which mine is, so I'm getting close to that. It's the $600 dock fee that I can't stand.

It was a local purchase and local trade. Clean carfax and I will check for flood damage under the carpet.

I’d say keep the 4x2. If you have no need for 4x4 dont upgrade for something you won’t use. Nothing is wrong with a 2 wheel drive truck, not wveryone off roads.
