I started my son with one of those general buckets that you can built houses, it has a few sets of wheels etc. to build general cars etc. Just to get him into the LEGO craze. Then later he started getting into specific themes. Now he has several thousand $ worth of LEGOs, and I am wondering, what else could I have done with all those $$. LOL. But I am glad he got into it. It is great for mental development, fine motor development, critical thinking etc.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
Lots of "bang for the buck" with these sets...

    https://shop.lego.com/en-US/Police-Station-60141

or you could get several lower priced sets...

Yeah I agree! See since I already gave him my old lego table and all old legos the bug has bit him and he always wants to play legos when I come over, which I don't mind! So I'm thinking a set now to get his critical thinking going and following instructions.

I'll echo the classic lego boxes. You can get the big box that has like 1600 pieces. This lets him build anything he wants.

My son is 5. He started with Mega Blocks then Duplos and within the past year has gotten heavily into the Star Wars sets. His first was the Duel on Naboo set. I think I got that for him right before he turned 5.
