Did any of the 01s have the 99-00 grill design???

I contacted a person who said they have an 01 taco for sale. In the original advert he only had a picture of the side of the truck. Then he sent me a pic of the front and it has the 99-00 front end styling exactly like this http://images.automotive.com/reviews/images/00tacoma.jpg

I sent him a reply saying that it looks more like a 2000 tacoma but he insists that the title and inner door badging says it's a 2001. I'm a little confused... I thought all the tacos from 01-04 has the trapezoidal front grill like so: http://www.lemonfree.com/reviews/images/01tacoma.jpg so who's mistaken him or me?

PS: what year and model has matching body and grill color like in the 2nd pic i provided?? I've only seen a few like that.

 

The grill changed in 01... If it has a front end like the first pic it is a 98,99, or 00'

No - no 2001 Tacoma came off the assembly line with the 1998 - 2000 style front end.

Unless the current or a previous owner has done a front clip swap, that's not a 2001 Taco.

 

Multiple / many ...

Color-keyed front end components were available as options (with certain packages; in certain colors) as early as the 1998 model year.

In the 2001 - 2004 era these would have been part of the SR5 Color Keyed Package (also standard on S-Runners).

 

The color matching through me off when I was looking for a Tacoma. Most six lug Tacomas have the big black fender flares, but the one I was looking at on the internet had painted flares. I wondered if it had been in a accident and repainted. Like Enola said, there were color matching options with certain colors of trucks. It is hard to figure out the color matching option. The red truck in that linked picture had a color matched bumper, grill surround, flares, but not mirrors. Mine doesn't have color matched bumpers, but flares mirrors and door handles.

Definitely check out the truck closely. The discrepancy could be an honest mistake or a bumper swap, but why did they change it if that is the case?

i think the limited models came with the paint matched fender flares and grill.

 

Sorry to thread jack but can you fit a 01 - 04 grill on a 97 without it becoming a huge project???

 

None that I have ever seen. My 2000 that got bought back had 2001 mirrors!
