You were able to get the skin off without taking the bumper off? We couldn't figure out how to do that with the supports being connected to the skin in what semed to be impossible locations to reach.

That's what I did, and by myself. Just follow the steps that were outlined and the skin comes right off. Biggest PITA was getting the plastic pads off (extra hands would help here) and, for me anyway, removing the corner braces after the skin was off.

It would definitely be easier to trade bumpers with someone local if you could, since then you only need to remove the bumper from the frame and swap it out. But I tried what the OP did here, looking for a trade, and could not find one, so went with the "acquire then sell" strategy.

Also, for another post above, I bought an unpainted bumper, had it painted (my painting skills are not great...) and replaced the chrome one, then sold the chrome one for $225 to a local via craigslist.

    very easy man.
remember, the corner bumper pads do not need to be removed until you have the whole bumper skin off. look around and remove the bumper skin bolts, then remove the center (long part) bumper pad to access the rest of the bolts.
