Over the weekend I installed a sub/amp in my double cab. I used some old gear I had laying around, but the shallow mounts I had did not fit, so I ended up buying a JL 8" microsub to hold me over until a future big build.

    For those interested, I used:

Best Kits - BHA1761 Toyota wire harness (every non JBL Toyota 1987 forward will need this)
Amazon - Reverse Toyota wire harness 71-1761 so I don't have to splice into any factory wiring

EDIT: I left leads for 12v constant, 12v switch and ground available so I can wire quick disconnects to a JL CL-RLC line driver (fancy bass knob) should I choose too

PAC Audio - SNI-35 2 channel line output converter
    Kenwood Excelon XR-1S monoblock amplifier
JL Audio 8" microsub (8W3v3 driver)
    misc wire I had sitting

The amp fits under the driver seat no problem and the 8" sub fits behind the rear seats with no rubbing and I was pleasantly surprised at how much output this thing does.

I also installed the @mesojdm ect module and fuse cover since head unit was out but I forgot to take pics :)

Nice, that looks clean. How’s that sub sound? I’ve been wondering about that one specifically for a while

Yea, I watched the install video and was thinking the same thing. I also plan to install an off/on switch so they only work when I want them to. I'm not a big fan of bars and running boards. The main reason I bought these was I have trouble getting my mom in and out when I have to take her places. These are wide enough and actually drop enough to help her get in and out. Probably a few weeks before I'll have time to install.

There is really not enough room to store more than spare keys and a credit card/money.

I saw a few horror videos of what it takes to remove this if you don't maintain it and let it rust in the hitch. If you buy it, I would make sure you pull it twice a year, clean and coat it, especially if you live in winter locale with road salt. Also, Tacoma needs the kit with long bolts. The link above supplies them. Bolts can be bought separately if you find standard kit at lower cost.

I like the idea of the hitch safe. How do you like it so far? Do you keep an extra fob in there or only when you need it? And lastly, is the whole assembly easy to take out...thinking ahead when you want to use the hitch to haul something.

I like it. Right now I have FOB, Swingbox and tonneau keys in it. I keep them in a ziplock bag. Not much room for anything else It really is pretty small. And yea, it can be removed in about 2 minutes.

Thanks for the info and link. I’ll have to pick one up.

Thanks for the heads up about the rust. I don’t have to worry about salted roads down here but I do have to worry about it being so close to the ocean.

Ok, then switch to a can of regular flat black paint instead. Still can be done less than $10 bucks. Instead of $84.

I'll agree here. But some people can't paint, and others have $$ to burn.
