How Much Weight to Ballance your 265/75/16 Duratracs?

I recently purchased a set of 265/75/16 duratrac's, I made sure to purchase them from a place that does the RFV ballancing, my problem is there is a vibration between 50-60mph. I took them back to be re-ballanced and I think they are actually worse now. Seems to be a shitload of weight on these things and wanted to see how much weight it is taking others to ballance thier 265/75/16 Duratracs. Have a feeling I have a bad set or something but wanted to get opinions here first before fighting the tire shop. Listed below is the total ammount of weight on each tire, they are dual plane bllanced so some of the weight is on the front and some is on the back of the rim.

FR - 19oz
FL - 20.5oz
BR - 18.5oz
BL - 18.5oz

 

I cannot give you weight ideas, but I have heard others say they are hard to get balanced. If they cant get them perfect I would get different tires...I wouldnt put up with that vibration.

Did you do this in-conjunction with a lift? Or were you vibe free before the new tires?

 

I did put them on shorlty after installing 5100's @ 2.5" but I rolled around for probably about 500 miles after the lift with the OE 265/65/17's with no virbrations.
Over 1 pound of weight per tire just seems crazy to me, I know the tire shop is going to say its becasue they are large aggressive tires but in reality there really not that large or aggressive.

 

Does it ride smooth now?

 

I have 30-31 oz. on my front two right now.

Its smooth everywhere but 50-60mph, I live out in the country and all our roads around here are 55mph

30oz Wow, that is alot of weight! Those are Duratrac's your running?

 

That seems like a lot- but what other people have is irrelevant. Small differences in the rims and tires from rig to rig will make plenty of difference in the amount of weight used.

You just gotta keep working with it.

 

No I got BFG KM2's. But I work at a tire shop and I have some of the "heaviest" wheels I've seen. But I have to do the stick on inside weights and that makes it a little worse. My trucks rides as smooth as glass though.

 

Ask them to pro match them. How many miles do you have on them?

They have about 1000 miles on them.

 

You have to have a good balancer to do it. It takes the lighest part of the tire and the lightest part of the rim and puts them in the best spot. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't do anything. You could also try rotating them.

A lot of the time it's just that the tire is "out of round" and will fix itself.

 

could always run sand bags inside the tires . when the wheel spins up the sand will go to the spot that needs the weight . it wont matter if the the rims and tires are swapped from truck to truck its still gonna do it . i have the same size tire on factory rimms and i have a vibe still after rebalancing them twice

 

Those sandbags are called Magnum balancing, they do nothing at all.

I have a 94 Explorer with 33" BFG M/T's, I had dyna bead put in them but I've never really been impressed with it, I dont think they put enough in or something, anything over 70 has a serious vibration. Its was disapointing becasue I really like the idea of an active wheel ballance.

Or....have them rotate the tires 180degrees on the machine and spin them again.

Or, you could do some research on EQUAL tire balancing. Looks like white suger granuals.

We used it on our jeep 35 x 12.50 x 15 on steal wheels. They ran awesome even on the highway at 70mph (never dared go beyond that in a lifted Jeep).
They've gotta put the right amount in, or else it won't balance right.

 

Tried to patch a tire today that had fix a flat in it and it ate the inner liner to shit.

 

You have to keep working on it. If they are a good shop they will help you out. I have guys that are so picky that it makes me want to shoot myself because they are never happen. But when we do make them happy, they are loyal for life and they spread the word.

 

I'm pretty much a newbie around here, but that kind of weight on a tire sounds ridiculous. I've read on more than one forum that the stock wheels on our trucks are lug-centric NOT hub-centric. As such they cannot be balanced properly w/o a bolt-up adapter. I forget the name of the piece. If your tire shop didn't use this adapter it could account for the problematic balancing and excessive weights. Might be something to look into.
