Has anyone tried adding custom topo maps (shape files) to the factory navigation system or know what format maps the system uses. I contacted Garmin and they had no idea if it could be done. Any help would be appreciated.

I seem to remember this question came up once before and the consensus was that it couldn't be done. I can't find the thread though, so it's possible I imagined the whole thing.

Can't be done until Toyota open up the entune API. I also don't believe Toyota use garmin data on entune headunits.
The next generation of entune, it should be possible from what I have read, but have no idea when the Tacoma will get that, and I doubt they will upgrade ours to the latest software, since I think its also a hardware change.

Wait till I get my full time rear camera going. I'm thinking of adding a 15in for HBO also

    Doesn’t use shapefiles.
    It’s a vector image cache.

If they unlocked it and if it was running garmin software you might be able to load the topo imagery files like a gps. I doubt they will though.
