My 01 D/C 3rz-fe has a bent valve, and with 195K on it I'd rather put in a JDM with 50k than rebuild the head.
How difficult is it, or what should I expect to pay?

I paid around 3300 for a 3rz-fe motor and swap last December.

1k for the motor then if its an exact match its a pretty easy swap if you’re so inclined

I can get the engine locally for $1200, looking for labor cost to determine if I'm going to do it myself.

If you make sure the motor ecu is the same style and it is around the same year then you’re talking very easy swap if you need to messs with pin outs then that gets tricky

Buy from a reputable source that gives you all of that information. Pre 99 has 8 port intake and 2000-04 has 4 port intake and the ecu changed a bit from 5.5-99

So the JDM 2RZ/3RZ/5VZ all have differences that you'll notice just by looking at the engine. The block and the head should be the same, but the intake, accessories, aux. lines, etc. are usually different. All you really have to do is swap over the accessories and associated components that don't match on your engine versus the original one. These trucks are super easy to work on mechanically I wouldn't be surprised if you could do it yourself in a weekend.

Thanks. So I just need to make sure accessories match to keep it simple?

I doubt you'll find a JDM engine identical to yours since the in the US the engines were spec'd to confirm to U.S. emissions standards and such.

Of course Tacomas don't exist outside of North America so mostly everything besides the block and main engine components will be different. You'll have to swap a majority of your original components.

If you don't want to do that just buy a USDM motor from another Tacoma

    I've often wondered the process....

Would you swap everything over first on the ground and then install the whole engine as one package ?

What kind of hoist ? Anything else I should know about the process ?

this is a situation where how much does it cost as compared to how "right" it is comes into play. If it is a standard trans you are going to want to put an new clutch assembly in her at the same time, more $, how are the hoses, especially the little ones off of the heater control valve, more $, is the radiator still good, more $.

JDM motors... while I have had good luck with them I have also heard of some peeps getting a bad one. By bad I mean that the guy who owned it in japan realized that he is going to have to replace it in 50k so why do I want to spend money on servicing it? An inspection of the oil fill cap and a sniff of the oil dipstick is a good test... if you have ever smelled a never serviced motor you know what I mean.

My latest JDM motor reguired that I swap out all of the pulleys on my old to the new dues to belt rib count differences.

Sure, something like that. Have both engines next to each other and swap over to the JDM engine whatever isn't the same on the original engine. As @Glamisman mentioned, you may have to swap the pulleys as well as most of the accessories and some aux. lines and sensors.

Just a standard shop crane. I bought my 1 ton crane from Harbor Freight for $99. Use it for everything.

I put the 2.4 in my 03 tacoma in 3/4 of a day... 2nd easiest motor I have ever done, Type 1 VW's being the first. New radiator, all hoses, tires, brakes etc. Drove her down the baja to Cabo 3 days later. 375k on the chassis atm and I am having the lower BJ's replaced today and putting on new headlights so I can see and night and used swing away mirrors over the fixed ones... its mexico and fixed mirrors get broke all the time.

Pretty easy swap if you have all the stuff, you'll 100% have to use the intake and exhaust as well as emissions stuff from your current engine as the vehicles the 3RZ came in in Japan didn't use any of that. Just an engine swap though, I could do that in a weekend, long weekend if beer is involved. Make sure you get the right one too, some came with a distributor, some came with two coil packs, and some have coil on plug. You need the same type as your own.
