I bought my first firearm today, and it was awesome at the gun range. I am out about $620 at this point between the gun $544, ammo ($50 for 100 rounds), ear protection ($7 S&W), and cleaning gear ($12). It is a XD 45 handgun 4" barrel. I put 25 rounds through it tonight and it has a much smaller amount of kick back compared to the XD40. I bought the 45 due to the fact that it was available for $150 less than the tag price, my dad knows a guy that does speed loading??, and it is a bigger round which leads to bigger holes!!!! I am still thinking about what to do with my kids, do I introduce them to guns, or leave it in the closet?? Any ideas would be helpful. Looking at getting my CHL by July when the next available class is. Thanks.

My take on whether or not to introduce a gun to children depends on whether or not they are old enough to understand what a gun is and what it's used for. I feel that the younger they are, the better. Most of the accidental shootings by children are due to curiosity. They have never been allowed to touch one, or have not been told about the dangers of touching one unless at a range. I introduced guns to my son at an early age. I let him handle an unloaded handgun, explained how it worked, and the responsibility of ownership. He never once took my gun without my permission. I don't suggest you need to allow children to fire a weapon at a young age, but they need to have their curiosity assuaged. Too bad a lot of gun owners who do have kids don't take them to a gun safety course such as those offered by the NRA. They would be properly introduced to firearms and their safe handling.

I shot my first gun when I was probably 4 or 5. It was a youth model .22
shot my first deer at 7. I think its a great idea to get your kids use to seeing them and knowing how to handle them responisbly. I've been around guns my entire life and never shot anyone or taken one to school or any dumb shit like that :D

Congrats on the purchase and good luck!

    And my first Handgun:

XD's are great guns. I used to have an XD40, the thing shot almost as good as my 1911, but got rid of it to get a SIG. You'll love that gun!

Hell yeah, can't go wrong w/ .45. Where'd you pick it up?

CHL? San Diego county? good luck, let me know how it works out! I have mine from WA, took a road trip recently and it was nice to be able to carry (UT and AZ).

Is your gun not illegal in California? My XD .40 is not legal (not that I ever plan on taking it there).

Sorry but I just recently moved to Corps Christi, Tx. I got a great price on the gun, the dealer actually priced match an internet price I found. I did the paper work and walked out 5 minutes later with my xD. Thats why I waited to buy it, in Cali you can only get a 5" I think with 10+1 mags. My kids are 7 and 2. My 7 yr old wants me to take him to the gun range, but he has a lot of listening problems and needs to gain a little more responsibility in my mind. Haven't shown him my new toy yet, but after doing some research on the topic maybe I will shortly. My next weapon is the A4M4!! Found one for $900 at Academy and it is a 5.56. Gotta save up buying some new wheels right now as we speak.

Purchased my first gun after 17 years of marriage 1 month ago: XD40 sub. Love it! Taking CCW this Saturday (even though AZ may be joining VT and AK to be able to conceal carry w/o a permit)

As far as the kids, I should it to my 16 yo daughter, 14yo son and 9yo daughter. I let them handle it, showed them how to respect weapons and talked about the danger of not respecting.

Funny enough, as I handed the safe weapon to each kid, the grabbed it with their finger on the trigger - so the teaching began!

The .45 is a great round for everything but hunting... can be loaded down for plinking, to specs for competition, and it's a proven problem solver. As for kids... it all depends on the kid. I have two 6yo stepdaughters who will learn to handle firearms, but only when I see the maturity required. For one, I'm thinking 10 years should be enough to start- for the other, maybe 14.

And I highly recommend loading your own- it makes a world of difference in your understanding of the guns.

i was introduced when i was 7 :) you always want to educate before someone finds it and decides to figure out how to use it themselves.

Thats what I'm thinking, but my kid doesn't listen to save his life! I could tell him over and over why it is important to leave the snake alone and he will still get bit! Maybe like someone else said around the age of 9-10 when he gets a change of mind he can start understanding things of the magnitude. I for sure am going to buy another firearm so he needs to learn the importance of these things.

yea, education only works when they pay attention lol. for now probably just hide it in a difficult place for him to get to but easy for you and call it good for a year or 6mo or so. or get him a bb gun and act like it's a 30-06 and teach him slowly to be incredibly safe with all weapons

You can get an xd45 with a 4" barrel in Cali. I know cause i got one ;). Congrats on the new toy. I know i love mine. I just wish it came with the Hi Cap Mags. Oh STEELERFAN your case says not legal in Cali because of the fact that it has the High Cap Mags. If it had the 10rd. mags it would be CAL legal

I was thinking that, but everyone I knew had the 5", but it for sure is a pain to get a gun in california. I'm in the military with a Kansas license and the place on base wanted all kinds of documents, like my orders stamped and certified, my registration to my car, my DL, my military ID, and after all that you had to wait at least a 10 day grace period!!!!! I took in a single copy of my orders and my DL and military ID, and walked out 5 minutes later gun in tote. The what they call here in Texas is a CHL only costs me 110 for a 7-8 hour class, shot at 3, 7, and 15 yards, and Texas gives me my license for free. I also got a fishing and hunting license for free as well for being active duty. Texas already has way better perks than the bastards in California.

Agreed with everyone here. Introduce once you think it will take in their brains. Nothing is better than going to sleep at night and knowing that you have taught them something that will save their life.

Breezy. I hear you on that. The only people I know that can walk and take one that day are the local LEO. I wish we had the perks that you guys do. The 10 day wait period kills the most. I just got my GF a taurus 24/7 9mm for her Bday and all she could talk about for 10 days was how much the wait sucked. Its times like that that i hate being from Cali.
