I have a 1999 Tacoma Prerunner - when I turn the key I hear click and can hear a hum like a motor trying to start but bogged down. After turning the key a couple of times it will start like it was in perfect order. Battery is good, relay tested good. Not sure if starter or switch. Tried starting in neutral and it did start after a couple key turns.

    yep..
Same exact thing was happening to me. Alt was good, battery good. I rebuilt the starter with a kit that included a new plunger and contacts. Fixed!

I should have replaced the brushes while it was out but the former parts are usually the culprit for starter issues.

It's quite simple to remove the starter, at least with the 4 cyl engine.

    Good luck!

Welcome to TW! I had a weird starting issue where my truck took longer than usual to turn over, but disconnecting the battery for 30 minutes fixed it.

Funny enough that also happened to me, a couple days ago the truck took like 10 seconds cranking over before starting, then the RPMs were real low and stuttering. Had my battery disconnected the day before so maybe that had something to do with it

Disconnecting the battery resets the ECU which can sometimes be the cause of starting issues.
