Hi! I'm new here. I had a 2001 prerunner that I loved for 13 years. Now I have this 2012 prerunner pictured below. I love a tough look but I've never been into tinkering or customizing vehicles so I bought this one used already customized. My Terra Grappler 285/60R18s are about out of tread and I'm thinking about switching to 17s. I'm just wondering if this is a good idea or not. I feel like the thicker tire wall looks tougher plus I've read its a smoother ride and that size tire is quite a bit cheaper than 18s. So would switching to a 285/70R17 be recommended/safe? I really like this look!

I also used your sites tire size calculator but I'm not quite sure how to read the results. I thought the size would be the same but it appears the 17s are a tad taller. And is the change in speed and gear ratio something I should be overly concerned about? Thanks so much!

You'd be just fine switching to a 17"
285/65-18 and 285/70-17 are so similar in size there will not be a notable change in feel or the speedometer.

If he's staying on the road, yes. Off road C, D or E rated would be an advantage.

I'm very happy with my E rated tires. I really don't think they're all that rough.

Thanks for all the advice! I'm happy with how it turned out. Sold the previous wheels and tires for $600, phone was blowing up, so I probably could've got more for them but just wanted to move them fast.

Is your truck lifted? What size tire did you end up going with?
