Fender flare installation on non-flared Tacomas: tutorial

Update: Brand new flares do not come with adhesive, just the plastic. Pretty weird, but no big deal.

Id install these but I dont think id be able to use my WeatherTech mudguards designed for non flare vehicles. And Id rather not rebuy new ones from them.

Love it! Nice work! I'm still a little sad BBP wasn't offered on the SR Utility models, but I'm thinking about adding a splash of that color to my truck with vinyl soon.

Possibly even taking a page out of the Nissan Juke book and doing the "contrasting mirror caps" thing with BBP. Would certianly stand out along with a BBP bed stripe, but I don't know if it would toe the line between "subtle but unique" into "what the hell am I looking at?" territory.

The other thing I'm realizing is that adding black (matte or gloss) flares gives the visual appearance of larger wheel wells, which happens to make stock tires look much smaller.

 

Thanks, mate. You had a solid write-up on this. I tweaked a few things, but nothing major. As an example, I used my Dremel to file down the three clips on the front of each flare, but if someone doesn't have one, sandpaper works just as well.

I thought the same thing about the appearance of larger wheel wells before I went down this road - glad I'm running 33s.

Did anyone ever figure out the part number for the matte off road flares?

Also is the install easier if you have an SR5 and already have color matched flares?

You are correct, I got a used painted set from a dealership that installed aftermarket flares for a customer.
So, I've never gotten a straight explanation of the parts catalog for this one. I only am working with parts of the puzzle. I do know that:

• No replacement flares are paint matched from the factory.
• Supposedly "paint to match" and "matte" are two different part numbers for the front only.
• The rear "paint to match" appear to just be matte flares and there is no separate part number.

Doc has used these parts numbers and gotten the right thing, so I would trust him.

 

I found, online, some used fender flairs from a short bed Tacoma, I have a long bed. Any idea if the part are the same/ Will the short bed flairs fit my long bed? Any advice is appreciated.

WIsh I had a flareless TACO...those things are salt traps! I see you live in AZ though...freedom from rust

 

I'm in Arkansas, but still freedom from rust. Lived in Alaska, Wisconsin and Michigan...all too familiar with salt/rust. I don't miss the long cold winters one bit. The summers? Miss those a lot.

 

If you read through the thread, I have also confirmed that the given part numbers are correct. There was a bit of confusion for me, but then it was settled once I picked them up.

 

Just did mine. Not sure if the 2018’s are different but after test fitting there were not any gaps anywhere so I didn’t put the tape on. Took 10 minutes!
