i have bought seats from a Ford Escape (2008). The driver seat is power, this is the main reason for buying them. They are very very close to the same size and bolt patterns to be not that much work. I have identified the wires from the Ford seat that operate the seats power functions. But what I have no idea of, is how to identify the other wires going to the seat that have to be connected, i.e. And I am just guessing here, the wires that connect to the seat belt, perhaps wires that monitor the air bag. And anything else I don't know of.
I have tried to search through google to identify the other wires by their colors, but have been unsuccessful. I am talking of the Ford. Their are many many wires included in the harness.
I know there is wire harnesses going to both Taco seats. I don't know what these wires are all for. I am afraid of tearing the seats out before I have some idea. I want to be able to transfer wires leading to old seats to the replacement seats but don't know how to identify what wire go to or do what function on either seat. The power and main ground I have worked out. And found that the Ford seat does work. If any one can point me in some direction to look for this information I would be eternally thankful. I have all the books from when you bought the truck, but don't know if some of the info I need is in there.

I have a 17 with the premium and tech package and the lack of power seats is another bummer especially when the manual adjustments feel like they're 1 inch increments!
That being said my seats have the heaters and I noticed that the passenger side must have some sensors for the front air bag. When I put my camelbak on that seat the airbag off light comes on, I guess it thinks there's a kid sitting there.

I don't have a service manual to look at the harness but maybe the wires you see are for those things?

I'm putting Lexus ES300 seats in my '98. Not even close to the year of your truck, but power seats in 1st gens were unheard of as you can imagine. The Lexus seats had something like 20 wires going into it - some go to the ECU, integration module, and power/ground. It's just a matter of sending 12v and ground to the right wires.

What wires are on the Ford seats?

I’m curious how the airbags are going to work out...just because an airbag is an airbag doesn’t mean it’s going to be cross compatible with a different make. I know fords usualy have different resistance values than Toyota’s at least for bypassing so there must be differences somewhere in the system.

I honestly have no idea how the 3rd gen differed from a 2nd gen but I can tell you on 2nd gens the 3 main things you need to get working for the TOYOTA srs ECU to work with are side airbags, driver side rail position sensor, and the passenger side weight sensor. Some of this stuff might require you to gut your Taco seats or harnesses and retrofit them to the ford seats.

On the ford seats, there should be 4 wires running to the drivers seat belt location, and depending on year, two to four to the passenger. Two wires are simply for the seatbelt chime, but the other two are for the restraint system and you should be careful with them. Ford uses a small charge in the seatbelt clasp that when activated (with airbag) pulls the seatbelt tighter, by lowering the clasp. Last Toyota seats I looked at didn't have that. So you should look to taking the clasps off the toyota sests and fitting them to the Ford seats. As for the Ford power, if they are non-memory seats, then you should only have to worry about two wires that run to the control unit (positive and negative), all other wires should run from control unit to the buttons, then to the motors. (I assume you did get the control units with the seats). If they are memory seats, then you have more problems, as the control units are not necessary with the seats.

if you post up some pics, i might be able to give you better help.

As for airbags in the seats, or weight sensors, I've never messed with those.

I mean how often are you moving your seat. Mine have been adjusted maybe twice in the last year.

Set it and forget it, absolutely no need for power seats.

unless you are short legged and need the "in between" stops you can't get with manual seats

For me the settings have a huge gap between "just right" and "shit well I guess I'll just get used to it", forward/back is like an inch difference per notch.
It's just like the transmission's gearing being too far apart for the engine.
$40k and no power seat option is kind of lame.

The lack of more adjustable seats in the Tacoma have been a issue for years. Even a Yaris has height adjustable seats.

    Doesn't seem to affect sales.

Competition has them but the Tacomas still leads hands down including resale.

When lack of power or height adjustable seats affect sales you'll see them otherwise I wouldn't hold my breath.

People already bitch about paying +35k for the truck, you think they'll be happy to pay more?

Are there any Toyota/Lexus vehicles that are a closer match?

I beleive the Tundras built for USA have power seats . You could always source parts this way .
Still no heated steering wheel mind you . The only reason I am not driving a new Toyota and " YES " it is 40 below zero as I type this

True, Tacoma outsells the other mid size trucks. As far as resale, you would expect to get more in resale, since Tacoma owners pay more to begin with.

I agree, Toyota will most likely not add power seats till demand makes sense for Toyota to add them to the Tacoma.

Yep, midsize trucks are getting high in price. Tacoma leading the way as far as costs. The cost does not seem to slow sales.
Doesn't it make you wonder a bit that Nissan or GMC/Chevy can add power seats and sale the truck for less than Toyota.

There’s a reason why they don’t put it in the Tacoma because of going off road into deep water motor would short out and would be a major expense
