I bought the shifter assembly out of a '96 4Runner which had pushbutton 4WD. Below you see the pushbutton 4WD shifter versus the J-shift shifter.

As you can see the pushbutton 4WD shifter has a nylon bushing on the bottom, while this is absent on the J-shift shifter.

I'm wondering if my J-shift shifter should have a nylon bushing at the bottom or not.

Push button 4WD on left, j-shift on right.

under the nylon piece of the j-shift is a rounded metal ball stud that is required by design since the j-shift moves 2 dimensionally. the push button shift only moves in 1 dimension so it doesn't have to be rounded. i dont think you can use one on the other because of this fundamental design

Oh yeah I wasn't trying to use the one way push button shifter on my j-shift. I just wanted to know if my j shift is supposed to have a nylon bushing or not since I bought the shifter separate from the transfer case. Didn't know if it was missing or not

Oh, I'm sorry. I was assuming you were doing so and addressed the post as a first-things-first scenario. I couldn't tell you definitely, but I can say if it needed any sort of bushing that you would feel an insane amount of play in the shifter if the bushing was not present but needed. and I mean a shifter would move over an inch in either direction without actually switching anything. The shifter should feel pretty snug and tight, not loose.

    Ah.

It's pretty snug. The shifts are smooth with no play so I think I'm fine. Thanks for the help.

Bartmaster. Do you have images of the transfer case where the shifter goes into? I think the shifter went with my new tranfsers case was not taken from it. The handle i have has the nylon end but no way it goes into the case. That or i am very blind.

Also should both shafts move easily? With a screw driver i can get one to move but not the other.

    My shifter.

    My transfer case.

They do not seem to go together.

    Thank you.
