2 weeks ago in Rome, GA, I saw 10 or so plain white 2017 Tacos getting prepped for some sort of fleet duty... exterminator? Electric co? Yeah, if you order a fleet, you can probably get a killer deal. But you are probably talking about putting them on a single invoice, so you would need to have all of your $$ lined up and buy a hauler's worth of vehicles to make it worthwhile for the dealer. I'm guessing...

I agree with you in general insofar as labor efficiency has skyrocketed the last 30 years while real wages have stagnated, driving a growing gap in wealth and deteriorating the middle class. However cars and trucks are actually a very poor example as they are one of the few products that has become CHEAPER over time relative to value.

Take for example a 1981 Toyota Pickup SR5 4x4, original window sticker:
    408452663.jpg

    5spd manual regular cab 4x4, MSRP was $10,797 in 1981... in today's dollars that's $29,298!!!

Yet I can buy a 2017 ACCESSS cab 4x4 5spd manual and MSRP is only $25,380.

So relative to inflation a 2017 Tacoma is actually $3,918 CHEAPER than a 1981 Toyota Pickup... not only is it less $ than it used to be but you get a TON more equipment that costs $ and didn't exist in 1981.

EIGHT airbags (those aren't cheap), ABS, Traction control, Ultra high tensil strength steele, brake assist, power windows, backup camera, Bluetooth, power mirrors, tire pressure monitors, auto LSD, etc... all of that tech costs $$$ yet the MSRP is already lower than it would be with just inflation alone.

Truth is you get a LOT for your $ on cars these days and the car business wasn't nearly as profitable as it was in the 1980s.

The American car market is the most competitive in the world, Americans are spoiled rotten when it comes to the value they get from cars at the prices they pay.... so its always amusing to me when Americans complain about car prices lol.

what is invoice price for that truck? I just got 2 quotes for the same type of truck.... and MSRP on the trucks were both right about 41,600ish - give or take a $100 for some dumb add ons.

2 quotes I got from different dealers were 38,463 and 38,930 - no clue what invoice are for these -

from these quotes - I think my target # for this truck would be $38,000.

    what is invoice?

I think you'd really be shooting for the moon at $38k but hey doesn't hurt so good luck and go for it. I wouldn't be disappointed if you couldn't get there though.

Pulled an invoice on an in stock 2018 TRDOR LB with premium and tech pkg at my Toyota store:

    MSRP $41,438
    Invoice $39,172

So if the quotes you got were genuine you're currently being quoted about $400-$900 below invoice. And at $38k you're asking for about $1,300-$1,400 below invoice.

I also wouldn't be surprised if you showed up to the dealership that quoted you $38,463 and they tell you that included incentives you don't actually qualify for (military or college grad rebate, or BOTH) or bump the price for dealer installed accessories or have an outrageous doc fee of like $500+.

But if they do that price straight up on a tacoma with an MSRP of $41,6xx then that's a great deal already at $700-$900 below invoice on a fresh 2018.

ok - thanks for the info - these are short beds BTW -

double cabs 4x4, short bed, 7544 model #

doc fee and sales tax etc were spelled out in the final price - so I trust these quotes.

Yes, I'll send a pic of the interior tomorrow.
It' the grey interior non leather and non tech Package. Its msrp was 37338 after the 995 delivery fee. I plan to get the Clazzio leather seat covers and there's plenty of tech standard for a guy like me.
I'm now saving for some BFG KO2s and a fox lift but that'l be a whole year away.

I don’t think he’d be shooting for the moon. The MSRP on mine was $41,805 and the selling price I got was $37,182.
    OTD I was @ 41,562.

Just a matter of finding the right store.
I’d say that he keeps getting quotes till he finds the right one.

10% off sticker is a given. The cost to manufacturer these trucks at the factory level can't be more than $5K to $7K. The parts and drive trains coming out of China and Southeast Asia are dirt cheap.

We had no 2018's I settled for a 2017 SR5 4X4 access cab V6 tow package and sat nav and backup sensors running boards ETC. Traded in a 2013 standard cab 4X4 got a lot for it. This truck is so different.

What are people in Canada paying for the 2018s? I'm thinking about getting the TRD Off-road, seems like a lot of dealers don't want to move much on the price.

Who else, or what other regions are able to order the TRD OR SB DC with MT with the Premium package? Here in the Northwest were told you can not order a premium tech package with a manual transmission.

I live in the Northeast and own a TRD Sport DCSB MT with Tech package but you absolutely can get it in the Offroad. Or at least you could as of the 2017 model year. If it wasn't available in my area I would have driven 500 miles for one. When you are talking about a truck that you will have for a long time a little road trip is no issue to me. It amazes me that people in California for example insist on getting their truck from the local dealer. For what? convenience. Take a couple of vacation days and drive east into nowhere land. They will sell you one for little profit because they are much more desperate. I wouldn't settle for anything more than 10% below MSRP and the exact set of features and color I want. Make some calls with offers and you will find the truck.
