Electric trucks are interesting. If it had solar panels on the roof integrated to charge the battery...overlanding would be pretty cool

I believe Tesla is developing electric big rigs, but I don't really know much about it.

Volvo is looking at electric big rigs too.

As for overlanding, you would need more than roof panels unless you parked it a lot, but field charging is possible. My buddy's old company was also mounting 40 foot vertical wind turbines on large trailers for the DoD. The trailer would be moved around with the turbine in a horizontal position, and when they got where they were going it would be raised just like a truck mounted ballistic missile. The trailers also carried lots of deployable solar panels and batteries to make a base camp power station.

The torque numbers on the Roadster are just silly. 10,000 Nm (~7000 ft-lbs). Who wouldn't want that kind of performance?

The Tesla Semi will start at $150,000. A longer-range version will cost $180,000.
    • The electric-car company is also selling a "founder series" version for $200,000 — the cost of which is due in full, up front.
    • CEO Elon Musk unveiled the Semi last week. The base model will travel 300 miles on a single charge. The long-range version will travel up to 500 miles.

If he can deliver on it, some big companies have already placed orders.

Let me know when Tesla starts delivering the cars it's already taken orders for, let alone another subsidized playtoy for the elite.

Ya, that's why I inserted if he can deliver. They aren't doing too well meeting demand on their cars.

And the oil companies aren't presently subsidized?

Per Tufts University study, the U.S. oil industry is subsidized about $4B/year through our taxes.

And I doubt that takes into account the fact the the United States has largely been left alone with the task of securing the oil supply around the world since WW2. How much have we spent being the world's police in the middle east and all points in-between, while Europeans use the same oil and heavily tax gasoline?

I was reading that they would make great vehicles for places like shipping yards where the high torque and low speed makes sense. Electric vehicles get worse "mpg" on highway compared to city, so it makes sense to leave the long haul stuff to diesels right now and start transitioning the in town stuff to vehicles that are more efficient at low speed and can be docked in the same place every night to recharge.

From the February 2018 Peterson's 4Wheel & Off-Road Magazine, This Just In section:

Both GM and Ford recently announced commitments to electrify their new vehicle offerings in the coming years. “General Motors believes in an all-electric future” said Mark Reuss, GM’s executive vice president of product development. Look for GM to launch “at least 20” all-electric and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles by 2023.

Ford CEO Jim Hackett announced the company will redirect a third of its internal combustion engine expenditures to vehicle electrification, says Automotive News. “We must accept the virtues that brought us success over the past century are really no guarantee of future success,” said Hackett.

Bollinger Motors announced it has taken more than 10,000 reservations for its B1 all-electric SUV.

Serious competition for the other non-truck there...........Ridgeline, watch out. Unibody a truck does NOT make - station wagon with open cargo area maybe. No competition for Tacoma detected.
