Since I am in cue for a tune, hopefully OVTune can get these things some low end power by the time they ship the next batch.

you're in the MT? the low power on the MT tune is there, as much as you're getting on this NA motor. I'm enjoying the crap out of it, and hopefully you will be too soon. happy turkey day.

the low-end power is real. the high end power is nuts.

Yep,M/T. Good to hear that he was able to get some power in the low end. Looking forward to getting the tune. I also read that these trucks don't really start to run until they get some miles on them, anyone experience this? I only have about 1600 miles on the truck so far and it looks like it will take me about 3 years to hit 20k, Lol

i wondered about the motor "breaking in"... it's a valid point but i haven't experienced it in this motor and I'm about 21k mi. my last motor, a VW 3.2 VR6, seriously opened up between 15-17k and drove solid like that until 136k when i totaled the car. but this 2GR-FKS has been pretty steady although I've played with tune and throttle things. i put a pedal commander in it at about 4k or something and the OV tune maybe at 14k or so since the alpha. but the hardware has seemed to be quite consistent from what i can perceive.

After putting some miles on 1.03 (91 octane) this week my observations are:

Throttle response: the time from pedal push to engine doing something seems much improved, it does start the process when you tell it to now. However, that is only half of the equation; the actual 'rate or rev' (is there a term for this?) is still VERY poor. Basically if it's in neutral and/or clutch pushed and you thump the throttle it does now start to rev as soon as the pedal is pushed instead of waiting a second or so like it used to, but it still revs so slow that to rev match for a downshift you still can't just do a blip of the throttle like you should be able to in any other vehicle, it still requires putting your foot all the way to the floor and holding it there for much longer than you should have to for it to build enough rpms to rev match. Once again, I don't expect it to ever scream through the rpm's like a sport bike but as it currently sits it is still unacceptable, this thing could rev twice as fast with a carburetor, there is still something in the tune severely holding it back.

In gear driveability: seems smoother through the power band, not as many wierd surges in power. Most noticeably that wierd (and downright dangerous) bog down/dead spot that it used to have right after you start to take off in 1st gear is much improved if not gone completely so you don't run the risk of trying to pull out onto a busy road and getting sideswiped because it decided not to move. Low end power also seems noticeably better and smoother, I feel like I don't need to downshift as often for minor hills.

Rev hang: still there, seems mostly unchanged.

MPG seems about the same, I was getting 17-18 on 1.02c a couple months ago but dropped to 16 in the past few weeks (before switching to 1.03), not sure if it's just due to the colder weather? So far on 1.03 I'm in the high 16's

I think i might load the 87 octane tune today or tomorrow and try it for a while

I'm going on a an expedition adventure this weekend and am thing to flash the 87 before I leave... I'll share my results.

Been reluctant to switch with all the awesomeness of the 91!

I really need to test what you are saying regarding throttle response. I can hear a distinctive blip when tapping it between downshifts.

I barely have to touch the pedal to blip it.

I do have a dead spot under 3,500 but it isn't in 1st gear. Definitely, 3rd and up.

Rev hang does suck! As does the engine braking.

My MPGs are really good. All stock at 36psi on my Sport. I got 19.4 on my last tank and am slightly over 18.6 since new. 1,300mi total. I generally drive for MPGs, but do mess around, like spinning up the rears in 2nd while heading up a wet on ramp.

I hate to ask, but could there be a B13 out there? May 2017 build date?

Got to drive a 2015 4Runner TRD Pro everyday since since Tuesday down here. I prefer the performance of 1.03C on the MT Tacoma :burnrubber:

The BMW i8 was pretty cool though...

Instant acceleration...it's like a jet boat vs conventional screw drive...it's the only thing that would drag me from my MT

A 3.5 Hybrid in the Tacoma would be very cool, IF it could still be had with a MT.

How fast the motor revs has nothing to do with the tune and everything to do with the flywheel. If you want faster revs you will need a lighter flywheel (less rotational mass) but I doubt anyone makes one for these trucks.......maybe but I have an auto so not looking. Heavy flywheels make smoother driving for your average consumer.

Light weight flywheel seems like it would be a PITA off road also

I'm not disputing you there, a heavy flywheel, and any other significant weight in the rotating assembly, will definitely limit how fast an engine can rev and when you get to that limit it just is what it is. BUT, the tune can hold it back as well and you can't convince me that's not what's going on here, there's no way this thing has reached its physical potential, it is still being severely held back artificially by electronics. I see where you're coming from, I've driven an auto truck and while it has its own quirks that the manuals don't have to worry about, it also masks the throttle response and rev hang issues that become very apparent with a manual.

I mentioned this in the development thread a while back, there are much heavier, older, less advanced engines that will rev way faster than this thing currently does. For example, I've got a '64 Chevy farm truck with a 4.8 liter inline six with a rotating assembly that weighs twice what the Toyota's does, it's wore out, hasn't been maintained in years, is sludged from never getting oil changes and has a crappy single barrel carb that isn't tuned properly and it will still put this Toyota to shame as far as throttle response goes.
