It differs in that the Hilux is an awesome true truck that is probably one of the best cars ever made.
The Tacoma is a soft imitation to cater to soccer moms in the USA who want a truck that drives like a car.
The Tacoma is still the best of the ones available in the USA. But that just shows how crap North American cars are compared to what’s available elsewhere.

But when you have people who set Cadillac as a good standard what do you expect???? Lol.

Weird thing is, Mexico has both Tacomas and HiLuxs. You’d think they could sell a small number of HiLuxs here in the US also.

In what way am I wrong?

the average North American car buyer thinks Cadillac is luxury so the shit they sell us matches that mentality.

Ever wondered why American brands are a total failure when they try to sell them to the rest of the world?

So is the frame different? The suspension? The brakes? The engines? The 4x4 system? The transmission? And if so, how so?

Frame is fully boxed, suspension is about the same or nearly, brakes are about the same as well as the 4x4 system. The difference is the overall ruggedness, they have widely considered bulletproof diesels as options. Most people don’t like the styling this side of the creek but I’ll take functionality over form any day.

I've travelled the world. I have also rode in many many vehicles on six continents. The US by far has the best vehicles and trucks. Not even close. Yeah, the Hilux is a good truck. Better than a Tacoma? Nope unless you want a diesel.

I think the whole “fully boxed frame” thing is irrelevant. Chassis are designed for strength and flex. The engineering, and the materials they are made from, are the only relevant talking points other than corrosion resistance.

To say “fully boxed is better”, without any other specifics, makes no sense. Maybe they fully box the hilux frame so they can use cheaper steel? Maybe the flex designed into the Tacoma’s open frame is an advantage? Who knows? The “indestructible hilux” reputation was based on a truck they also sold in North America as the “Toyota Pickup”. It has nothing to do with the current generation of Hiluxes sold in Mexico, Australia, etc.

What is certain, is other than the atrocious rusting issue Toyota suffered in the early Tacomas, I’ve never seen anyone say they snapped the frame on a non-rusted Tacoma.

I believe the indestructible Hilux reputation came in the form of the overseas diesel versions that were able to survive war conflicts abroad.

After owning a 1988 diesel Hilux for a year, and numerous trips as passenger in my friend's 3rd gen, I'll throw in my two cents:

For everyday comfort on highways and technology, the Tacoma wins hands down.

But the Hilux wins in back country. It just feels built together well and can take on anything. Even though my 1988 has 73 hp, and 113 lbs of torque, all of the torque is down low so you feel it. It can perform okay in city driving and bumper to bumper traffic, but not well on interstates.

The cool thing about the current model Hilux is that they are making it more and more comfortable but still keeping it rugged enough at the core.

Have you ever looked up Buick sales in China, if i am not mistaken they sell more cars than Audi, BMW, Mercedes, and Honda. Plus, I think Cadillac sells more vehicles overseas than it does here at home.

It’s almost definitely a “grass is greener” thing, I’m sure many people given the opportunity to drive hiluxes would choose a Tacoma instead. However, most of these other countries have the choice of the best from the US and all the other manufacturers. I for one, would simply enjoy the opportunity to buy a 70 series LC, Hilux, fiesta RS 2 door, the COUNTLESS 70+ mpg (metric) diesel cars, etc..

That’s the difference, we don’t have the opportunity to choose these vehicles while the majority of the world does.

02 Tacoma, fixed with curse words.
I don't get the Hilux hype, they were badass 15+yrs ago but now it's just a Tacoma with a uglier body slapped on it and a boxed rear frame. One of my neighbors had relatives over from mexico and they had a Hilux. I crawled under it expecting to spill my seed all over oogling at the rugged awesomeness, and except for some minor frame boxing, it's the same thing as a Tacoma. To top it off they are uglier in person than in pictures. If I had a choice I would take a tacoma with a welder and some steel to box the rear frame in over a Hilux.

A 70 series on the other hand....
