I guessed too far north. Did you split those rounds with a maul or a wood splitter?

A maul. There madrone rounds and I got them from a burned area, they split pretty easy after they’ve been torched.

Thanks! They are gorhino dominator nerf bars. The yellow stripe is just some ladder grip tape from Home Depot

Some of "that" firewood sits in my driveway -- added a little to it this weekend. Therer is quite a bit as you may see, but I usually burn wood that is at least 1 year old. It is 90% white oak and red oak. I saw that softwood stuff they burn in the northwest and the Rockies and I thought it was "balsa wood". But sadly if that's all that you have it's better than nothing. I love the exercise --especially at my ageIMG_0004.jpg IMG_0014.jpg

Do you run your splitter in the vertical mode or horizontal? I have found that if I can get the wood on the beam in the horiz. mode -- it is far easier on my back.
Sometimes the oak is just too heavy and I am forced to use the vertical, but as soon as my chunks get light enough to lift -- I switch to horiz..

I just rented it from an equipment rental place near by, they said it had to be run vertical or it would t have enough hydraulic pressure. This was all Maple, Ponderosa Pine, Alder, and Cedar, not heavy so much, just not used to being bent over so long

That's exactly why I asked, and exactly what makes me sore -- the stooping over constantly. Sounds to me like the splitter was messed up or the people at your rental place were feeding you some crap. It is just hydraulic lines -- if the splitter has the proper amount of hyd. fluid and that tank stays in the same plane --(most do)--then it should make no difference --as it is the hydraulic pressure that moves the piston!??
Ours is a 3 way ownership -- most people don't use one of these enough to justify single ownership!

Yeah now that you mention it I feel kinda retarded for not trying it horizontal. All the rounds we split were between 6-10" with only a couple at 24". Not heavy enough to need it vertical like that. Lesson learned I think

Very impressive! We burn a lot of Douglas Fir over here. Because one, it’s abundant with all the wildfires, and two it’s a great fuel to start off with. Get the fire going with the softwood, burns quick and hot, then we usually throw a nice chunk of Black Oak or Pacific Madrone on for the night. If I could burn hardwood all the time I totally would.... I think our black oak is similar to your red oak as far as density.

Wow looking great! how’s your back feeling today? I completely feel your pain, my back and abs were recked last weekend. I split and stacked about 2 cords and felt sore well into the week.

Wrecked for sure. Ibuprofen for the win. The photo is deceiving, that pile was huge. Not sure exactly, but that stacked up to 2 piles about 5' tall and 20~' long. At least a couple cords
