I was curious about this also and wonder if it is hard wired or if they just run the cable to the 12V plug in the dash. 670 is steep, but does have the install included. Maybe you can get a better deal if you regularly service your truck at the dealer.

It would be cool if a system could tie into the existing feed from the rear back-up camera.

I agree, that would be cool. The only issue is that my back-up camera gets obscured by road grime and snow when the weather is bad. I like the idea of not having to install another camera though.

Backup cameras point too far down and are too short viewing for an effective rear dash cam.

If you pay the $700 for the Toyota camera you are crazy. They will install it just the same as any other dash cam, because that’s what it is. It’s not a plug and play system.
So why pay triple the price for an inferior product just because it says toyota on it?
A clean install of a dash cam takes about 5 minutes if you can hide the cigarette lighter power supply. About 30 mins if hardwired.

Please don't pay that price for a dash cam.

$49 at Walmart this week. HD dash camera, not sure if it fits in the GoPro mount, but comes with a dozen different mount pieces, hard to go wrong.

True. I wouldn't argue with you, that's why I walked away from it. GoPro is the only way I would go if I wanted one, I don't think I need it that bad.

I don’t think the go pro is a very good dash cam though is it? The whole point of them is they auto start when you start the car and auto save any sudden shocks.

There are some very good heap dash cams if you know what to buy.

Agreed. Haven't done much investigation on this, but I'm sure you're right. Auto-start ones would be best. For me, I just don't see having this as a requirement, but then again the first time I need it I'll probably regret not having it. Some jackass would make it worthwhile to have a video. Maybe I should rethink the need.

Sounds like the Toyota Dash cam will not record a "parking event" until it happens, and then record for 20 seconds...! (after the hit)

My BlackVue "monitors" what is going on around the truck (without recording to the card)...and if there is a movement of the truck, the dash cam records 5 seconds PRIOR to the impact and continues to record......So I get Pre-impact recording of 5 seconds...... That's the way I understand it..!!

The Toyota one just looks too pricy..... good quality video....BUT, NO rear camera video either..!!

Yeah it has a lot of great features and very high image quality but you would have to back into the parking stall each time to really protect yourself for hit and runs. With the BlackVue one, if you were parked at the mall all day wouldn't it possibly drain your battery with all the traffic driving around there?

No, it uses a Power Magic Pro... and you can set the amount of power drain you are willing to accept... I choose 12V as the "cut-off" point on the Parking mode.... Don't forget...it does not "record" in parking mode... it only monitors until a hit or movement...(shut down the "movement" part and only use "impact", and it will record less and use less battery... THEN it records to the SD card 5 seconds PRIOR and 20 after, I believe..! My camera will watch my truck for about 24 hours before shutting down parking mode maybe longer....never actually checked it out..! Could be longer....not sure..

I guess it does...if you consider it sits there till needed and then kicks into action.... !!

No, it is watching BUT not recording to the SD card..... till there is something/someone moving around or a "shock" event on the truck....THEN, it will write (record) to the SD card..(and record the last 5 seconds PRIOR to impact and then 20 secs or more).. This saves SD card space..!!

What the Blackvue does is record and if it detects a shock (Such as someone backing into your vehicle) it "Marks" the event so that it is not overwritten by future recording.

It does the same if you are in a collision, it marks the event starting 5 seconds before the event.

Then you or the Police can recover the chip download the video and review the event or collision.
