Tacoma > Wrangler for offroading, YOU READ THAT RIGHT

Wait - “Couldn't handle the heat.” ?? Weren’t you just out there? Glad it wasn’t summer!

We do a lot of solo off-road trips in our Tacoma’s, even in summer. The three things we do though- bring plenty of water for all, bring my SPOT PLB, and tell my family where we will be and returning. Never had a breakdown. My work trucks all were domestic- ford, dodge and jeep. All left me stranded at one time or another.

But I did kind of think it was running hot and maybe triggered a limp mode or fuel cut or something. After realizing the problem was persisting even below operating temp we kinda figured it was an ECU problem or fuel pump failure. Turned out to be the ECU (well PCM but same difference)

 

Why anyone would want a Jeep JK or JKU is beyond me. I love both my '11 Tacoma TRDOR and my built '04 TJ Unlimited (LJ). Two completely different vehicles designed for completely different purposes. To say one is better than the other is just dumb.

Buy a 3rd gen. Takes care of that problem right away

A real question... has anyone here run the Rubicon in a stock Tacoma (any flavor)? I've been on a ride along in a CJ7 and one in the group had a brand new YJ 4 cyl 5 spd all stock. Ran the whole thing and came out no worse for the wear. Really don't think a Tacoma could do it. A Jeep is a Jeep, a truck is a truck, apples to oranges. On the newer note, there is no U.S. brand that I would shell out big bucks for and that includes the newer Jeeps. Do miss my 98 YJ tho.

I know toyota took a pack of stock 2010 4runners up the rubicon when that gen was being released (I sold toyotas at the time). If a 4runner can make it a Tacoma definitely can. I imagine you'd get some dammage without skids and sliders though.

 

I heard if it persists for over 8 hours you should call your doctor. I don't even want to know what he does for you.

Yeah. I've got a 02 TJ. Stock 30,44 but chromoly, locked, savvy arms and tummy tuck, OME springs and shocks etc.. It does great at Moab for what it is built for and is easier to build to a good level of crawling than a Tacoma for sure.

However I just bought a Tacoma because it will do things my Jeep is not good at, such as making a comfortable overlanding rig.

Apple's to oranges. One for rocks, one for daily and overlanding. They are good at different things.
