Hey guys quick question. The mechanic that has my third gen tacoma says in order to replace the steering rack he needs to either
    A)Pull the engine
    B) drop the front diff

I wish i could get under the truck right now because that sounds like a load of bullshit.

Someone let me know! Im on my way to tell him off and take my truck eleswhere

Ps dont tell me to use the search function. I have. This is a discussion forum lets discuss this

It can be done without pulling the diff but it's a pain in the ass and a lot of wiggle work. It's actually easier to just pull the diff since it's only 13 bolts.

Yep. Too tight to pull without lifting the engine up a bit. 4Runners have to do it Too, so it's not only a Tacoma thing.

Curious why this is a need that's not warranty related. Accident?

    Alright second question.
Toyota says this is a 17+ hour job ie. $1800 labor
This guy says 10 $1000 labor
The shop i was planning to take it to says 4. $448
    Whose correct?

Im hoping its the low one

Toyota also says to completely remove driveshaft, exhaust, frame crossmember and sway bar. I don't have a sway bar and if you remove the front diff you can avoid all that shit.
I did mine laying on the ground on the garage floor in 6 hours.

Is the rack broken, seals blown, or did you just hop a tooth?

Are those shop prices without the rack?
I did it myself on a second gen in a couple hours didn't remove diff or engine. Not sure of the differences in 3rd gen. But I think you could do it yourself and save

Doesn't matter who is right as long as the low one will guarantee they'll only charge you 4 hours (regardless if they are wrong) and will stand behind the quality of their work.

Shop flat rate hours are often longer than a seasoned person can do the work properly. That's how good mechanics book 60+ billable hours in a 40 hour week.

It hopped a tooth and power steering shut off. This guy replaced the steering pump already and originally wanted to replace the rack as a "precationary measure" now hes saying it needs to be done. No hydrolic leaks at all. Just no power steering

Was wondering what the prognosis was going to be after your last vid. Sounds crazy expensive, diy maybe?

My buddy drove his 95 like that for about 6 months. It will make a man out of you real quick. SO unsafe. But anyhow not to poke fun at your situation saw the footage before stump. Looked SICK! Wishing the best with repairs and great vids!

Covered in stickers and chrome stick-ons for extra horse torques and foot powers. Icon sticker gets me tons of travel, dozens of milimeters.
Fucking third genners man. You haven't even looked under the truck and you're going to "tell him off."
