Hello can someone help me figure out what this noise is? It comes up whenever I hit on my brakes and this noise has been going on for some time but the dealership just keeps saying they couldn’t reproduce the noise or that there “is a lot of brake dust”. I would appreciate anyone’s input.

    Choo choo option!

Seriously though. Sounds like they are glazed. I have run into that forever ago on an old VW. I hit them with some sandpaper (lightly) on the pads and rotor surface. Wise old hippie helped me with this diagnosis and it worked.

Find a straight stretch. Back up at a good but safe speed and get on the brakes fairly hard. Do it acouple of times and see if that doesn't do it.

Is it ALWAYS like this?? Or only before the truck is warmed up??

Sounds like normal rust on the calipers coming off.

Both.....this noise always happens even after I’ve driven it 20-30 miles or when I just move it from the driveway. When it comes to moving it from the driveway I figured it was because it’s not warmed up properly. But when it makes the noise when I’m braking for a pedestrian that’s crossing near my campus it’s quite embarrassing, and annoying.

hmmm how many miles on your Tacoma?? If youre over like 30-40k your front brake pads might just be getting low. Once they wear past the slanted edges they become flat which can produce noise (even before hitting the warning scratcher thing)

did you use quality OEM pads?? Install the noise reducing shims?? Might need to spray the shims with anti-squeal

I currently have 20,760 on the truck but it’s been doing this noise since 12ish.

I’ve done no changing, it still has the factory pads and whatever else on it, dealership said I had excess of brake dust causing the concern, and they supposedly cleaned them but recommended I do’s brake cleaning to the rear. The only thing is that a day after they supposedly cleaned them it made the damn noise again so.....

Sure it is coming from the front? I replaced drum brakes once and one of the drums (brand new) was messed up from the start. Gave the shoes a really odd wear pattern. No matter what I did, sanding, adjusting the clearance between the shoes and drum, etc. I couldn't get it to stop squealing the last couple seconds while coming to a stop. Only thing that fixed it was replacing the drum and shoes.

If it is the front, id isolate which side it's on and check if the pads are glazed. Gotta replace them if so or else you'll spend the rest of the life of them telling everyone they are "high performance pads and just make that noise"

hmmm the only other thing I can think of is taking the pads out, inspecting and if everything looks good just use some anti-squeal on the rear silencer shims.

You also may have glazed the pads at some point that lead to uneven wear, I know I had super noisy brakes on my old Supra one time and it was because of uneven pad wear. I just put in new pads and was good to go.

at 20k miles you probably have a lot of pad life left but if its really bothering you might just want to replace the pads early anyways and at least be happy :)

If you do it youself it'll only cost you like $50 and a couple hours on a Saturday morning.

I’m not sure where it is coming from to be honest with you, I was just trying to get some opinions right now, since the dealership ain’t helping any. I’ll be sure to do some inspecting this weekend!
    Thank you
