Table Vise

Can anyone recommend a good table vise that can handle most automotive needs for under or close to $100? Need to do some work on my control arms, ball joints, etc. I've been reading too many reviews.

 

Buy an antique one. Most new vices especially cheap ones are junk.

 

check your local craigslist...prob find a good deal there...

 

X2 I have found good deals through my local "Houston area blacksmith ass". Older the better.

 

Anyone think an old craftsman with a 3 1/2 inch jaw and a 4 inch jaw opening would hold a lower control arm for swapping out bushings?

 

You can never have to many vises .

While the older ones are better sometime they have been neglected and abused

That is a really tiny vise .

It will depend just what you have it attached to

Craigslist, local yard/garage sales or even Facebook marketplace. The best vise I own (rather, the one I used most often) was $25 bucks, which I found at a yard-sale down the road from my house.

 

It is small. Seems ery sturdy though. In good shape. I live in an apartment and I don’t have a bench, but I did build a sturdy 24”x24” base that it is mounted to.

 

I’ve been all over craigslist and this is the only one I’ve been able to find. Figured it has to work for now.

 

I never thought I’d ever say this, but that’s a damn cute vise.

 

Hahaha. Isn’t it? I’m banking on it being more than meets the eye.

 

pawn shops are good place also...you should find something in FT worth area....

I didn’t see those at the time. Must not have made my search wide enough or something. Too late now. I’ve got the little guy to do the big job. Hopefully it will do well enough to hold a lower control arm in place.

Have you ever removed these type of bushing??

You may be in for a surprise .

Most end up using a Oxy-fuel torch and sort of burn them to get them out .

Living in Texas it might not be so bad

 

When it comes to a vice you get what you pay for. Like many have said check out the local online buy and sell sites as they get you better quality for less money (if you can find something decent quality).

 

Been there. Be careful, they light up like an ozone destroying black smoke fireball from hell.

 

This will be my first time attempting this job. I've seen a couple videos and think I can handle it. Did not know that they are potential fireballs from Satan's asshole. I'll be sure to have my fire extinguisher handy. As far as the vise goes, I think the little guy should hold up. It only needs to hold the arm. I'm not going to be using it to do any hammering or super aggressive fondling. I really appreciate the the feedback, gentlemen.
