OK-im looking for a new truck but thinking a used would be better financially. (specifically a DC 4x4 TRD Sport). According to Consumer Reports:

The overall score on an 05 is much better than average
The overall score on an 06 is much better than average
The overall score on an 07 is better than average.
The overall score on an 08 is average.

The brakes in 07 were worse than average. That was the only feature rated below average. on any year.

(Im not thinking Consumer Reports is the end all be all)

Another question is the '10's have the special traction control, backup cam, side airbags, anything else worth paying for?

Im thinking an 05 maybe a bad idea because they were the first out?

Any advice appreciated. $30K out the door for what I want is a bit stiff.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
The 05's are pretty solid actually.

Consumers Union also says about 3 years old is a 'sweet spot' for getting almost new without the huge depreciation. Likewise, I think 3-4 years is the max for CPO which gives you a warranty extension and a bit more peace of mind, perhaps.

And for me, they dropped my 2 favorite colors in 2009+, so I picked up a lightly used '08.

Ha ha just look at the forum and you will find 07 to be the best year, you can have something newer but do you want to troubleshoot VSC, A-TRAC, Auto LSD, hill assist etc etc. In few years you going to spend weekends figuring out which sensor is making your check engine light go. or why your dash looks like Christmas tree. :p
look for one with LSD or e-locker if you can find one.:D

My general rule. Stay away from 1st year model.

PS, I bought an 07 DC 4x4 last year. Great deal. $19.5 with 36K miles. Clean record, but had a small dent on back rear bumper corner.

    None yet! It's new!
I bought a "used" '09 with 3,000 miles on it. Sold a '96 to get it. I think the big changes to note for '09 are electronic-related. The LSD - not a "real" limited slip, but it works with the brakes, and it works well. The VSC/TRAC is also different I believe. It's actually quite capable, despite all the whining you hear on the forums. :) The brakes do seem mushy compared to early brakes like my '96 had, but if you take it as a whole, there's no comparison. The '09 is much more capable.

I don't view any of the Tacomas as real "TRUCKS" though... if you get my real meaning. They're kind of like cars with a bed in the back. Sure, they're light trucks, but they're not like a big truck. Getting off topic here. Anyway, I like the additions to the '09+ trucks.

X2 Most of the time I really don't care what Consumer Report or any review saying. As long test drive the truck and see what you feel likes. Tacoma have really good value and etc. Lots of owner mods their truck and even change the seat if they want to. My step uncle brought used 08 Tacoma for his work transporation and had no problems. He sold it for Tundra.

Oh they good when truck has factory warranty, once you have to pay for repairs or do it yourself those things are nightmare... Thats why luxury cars when they get old are cheap. They are pack with electronics that cause them to be money pits with no end.
